Mithya, Sumanth Bhat’s 2023 Kannada feature debut, follows an eleven-year-old boy trying to find his place after the deaths of his parents. Taken with his younger sister from Mumbai to live with relatives in Udupi, he faces not only grief but a new home, a different language and questions he cannot easily put into words. The 98-minute drama is less interested in tidy explanations than in watching how a child moves through an unfamiliar life.
Mithya begins with a child displaced by loss
The boy at the center of the film is Mithun, known as Mithya. After his parents die, he and his younger sister go to live with their maternal aunt, Jyothi, and her husband, Surya, in Udupi. Mithya found his mother’s body, and the experience shadows the way he relates to the adults around him. Scroll.in’s April 28, 2025 account describes him as a child who barely speaks and struggles with Kannada after growing up in Mumbai.

The move makes grief part of an everyday adjustment. Mithya must share a household with his aunt’s family, including their daughter, while learning how to exist among people who are trying to care for him but cannot simply undo what has happened. Later, relatives from his late father’s side arrive to take the children away, adding another upheaval to a life already altered without his consent.
Silence and observation shape the film
Scroll describes the film’s approach as observational: it relies on camerawork and ellipses rather than explaining every feeling or theme. A recurring image places Mithya with his back to the camera, facing difficult choices. The composition invites viewers to stay with his uncertainty instead of treating silence as a puzzle that must be solved.

That restraint suits a story about a child who cannot readily narrate his own experience. The film’s emotional force, as Scroll reads it, comes from watching how he inhabits rooms, relationships and moments of decision. Its final scene is interpreted by the publication as a request to bear witness to Mithya without judging him.
A naturalistic family drama, not a conventional mystery
Although the story includes remembered violence and unanswered questions about the parents’ deaths, the emphasis is on the boy’s response and the family life that forms around him. Scroll praises the naturalistic performances and says the film avoids manipulative melodrama; those are the reviewer’s critical judgments, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.
Rank #2
The publication also places the film in conversation with the series Adolescence and says some moments recall gritty British realist dramas. These are critical comparisons rather than claims of direct influence. For viewers drawn to intimate dramas about children navigating adult circumstances, Mithya offers a quiet, attentive portrait rather than a heavily explained account.
