Yes: *Dolores Claiborne* is based on Stephen King’s 1993 novel. The 1995 film turns its central question into a mother-daughter mystery: when Dolores is suspected in the death of her wealthy employer, Vera Donovan, her estranged daughter Selena returns—and the suspicion reaches back to the mysterious death of Dolores’s husband, Joe.
Why this is more than a whodunit
The film begins with a present-day death and an investigation, but its emotional center is the uneasy reunion between Dolores and Selena. Dolores, played by Kathy Bates, is under suspicion after Vera Donovan, played by Judy Parfitt, dies. Selena, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, comes home after a long absence, bringing her own assumptions about her mother into a story that looks backward as well as forward.
As Dolores tells detective John Mackey about her life, the account reaches her disintegrating marriage and the suspicious death of her violent husband, Joe St. George, played by David Strathairn. The two questions—what happened to Vera, and what happened to Joe roughly thirty years earlier—are bound together by Selena’s return. The film’s tension comes not only from whether Dolores is guilty, but from what a daughter can know about the mother she thought she understood.
Is *Dolores Claiborne* based on a Stephen King book?
Yes. The American Film Institute identifies the film as an adaptation of King’s novel, and King’s official bibliography dates the book to November 1993 and lists Viking Press as its publisher. The film was released on March 24, 1995. The official synopses frame the movie around Selena’s return and Dolores recounting her life during the investigation; that is a useful way to approach the adaptation without assuming the film and novel tell the story in precisely the same way.
