It is being developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The game is described as a spiritual successor to KOTOR, but Lucasfilm says it is not a direct sequel or continuation.
What is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic?
Revealed at The Game Awards 2025, Fate of the Old Republic is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. Arcanaut Studios is developing it in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The studio describes the project as being in early development for PC and consoles. StarWars.com’s announcement and Arcanaut Studios’ announcement establish those details.
The official premise puts the player in the role of a Force user in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth at the end of the Old Republic. Choices are described as shaping a journey toward light or darkness. Those descriptions establish the story’s broad setup, not the specific mechanics or consequences of individual choices.
Who is directing it?
Casey Hudson is the game’s director. StarWars.com identifies him as the director of the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. That background connects the new project to two well-known role-playing game series, but it does not establish that Fate of the Old Republic will use their combat, dialogue, progression, or choice systems.

Is Fate of the Old Republic a KOTOR sequel?
No. “Spiritual successor” is the studio’s framing, but Lucasfilm explicitly says the game is not a direct sequel or continuation. It will feature new characters and an all-new story. Douglas Reilly, Lucasfilm Games’ vice president and general manager, said it “is being built by people who helped shape that legacy.”
That makes KOTOR relevant as a creative and thematic point of comparison, not as a story the new game is confirmed to continue. The official announcement does not establish returning characters, shared plotlines, or a direct narrative link.
