What is Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic?
Announced by Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games at The Game Awards 2025, Fate of the Old Republic is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG. Casey Hudson, who directed the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, leads the project at Arcanaut. StarWars.com’s announcement interview and Arcanaut’s press release identify the studios and the game’s announced direction.
When will it be released, and what platforms are confirmed?
There is no announced release date or release window. Arcanaut describes the game as being in early development for PC and consoles, but has not named which consoles. The announcement also does not give a preorder date or provide a specific launch schedule. Those are the confirmed details; estimates about how many years development might take are not an official timetable.
What is the story about?
The announced premise follows a Force user through a galaxy at the end of the Old Republic, described as being on the edge of rebirth. Player choices will shape a journey toward light or darkness. The developers have not released a detailed plot summary; the official interview says the game will feature new characters and that the team is keeping story details close.

Is Fate of the Old Republic KOTOR 3?
No. Lucasfilm Games says it is not a direct sequel or continuation of KOTOR. The accurate description is a spiritual successor: a new story carrying forward the creative legacy and the focus on cinematic, choice-driven role-playing. Reilly, Lucasfilm Games’ vice president and general manager, says the project “is being built by people who helped shape that legacy.” Hudson’s involvement connects the new game to the original’s creative history, but does not make it a numbered sequel.
How is it different from the KOTOR remake?
Fate of the Old Republic is a new game, distinct from the Knights of the Old Republic remake announced in 2021. The remake announcement concerned the original game, released in 2003; it is not evidence about Fate’s eventual console lineup.

The remake’s 2021 PlayStation announcement described the original as a Star Wars Legends story set more than 4,000 years before the original trilogy. That is context for the original game, not a confirmed setting detail for Fate of the Old Republic.

Hudson’s leadership is a meaningful creative link: he directed the original KOTOR, one of the works whose legacy the new game invokes. He has called working on KOTOR a defining experience in his career. The announcement also describes a contemporary vision built around player agency and immersion. But the announced connection does not establish that the new game shares the original’s characters, plot, or continuity; official comments instead identify a new story.

- A release date or release window.
- The specific consoles beyond the general statement that the game is for PC and consoles.
- A detailed plot, full character lineup, or further explanation of how choices affect the story.
- Preorders or a confirmed product listing for the new game.
