Arcanaut Studios and Lucasfilm Games announced it at The Game Awards on December 12, 2025. It is in early development for PC and consoles, with no release date or window announced.
What is Fate of the Old Republic?
Arcanaut Studios is developing the game in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, with Casey Hudson leading the project. Hudson directed the original KOTOR. The official description calls Fate of the Old Republic a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG in which players take the role of a Force user in a galaxy on the edge of rebirth. StarWars.com’s announcement and Arcanaut Studios’ announcement describe the project and its team.

Is it KOTOR 3 or a sequel?
No. Lucasfilm Games says Fate of the Old Republic is neither a direct sequel nor a continuation of KOTOR. It will tell an all-new story with new characters. “Spiritual successor” describes the creative aim: to honor KOTOR’s tradition of cinematic, choice-driven role-playing, rather than carry on its plot or continuity. Lucasfilm Games VP and GM Douglas Reilly said the project is “being built by people who helped shape that legacy” in StarWars.com’s interview.
What has been revealed about its story and choices?
The confirmed premise remains broad: the player is a Force user, and choices deepen a journey toward light or darkness. Casey Hudson described the game as a new story about “choice, destiny, and the timeless struggle between light and dark.” The official materials do not identify the protagonist, companions, plot events, combat system, or detailed choice mechanics, so those details remain unconfirmed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play the original KOTOR while waiting?
The original Knights of the Old Republic is a separate, available game—not a version of Fate of the Old Republic. StarWars.com lists KOTOR for iPad, iPhone, Mac, and PC on its official game page. Nintendo lists its Switch version as downloadable software, while Limited Run Games separately documented a physical, region-free Switch cartridge edition. That product page also describes a Premium Edition with items including a SteelBook and concept-art cards; it does not establish current stock or availability. Nintendo’s listing and Limited Run Games’ page cover those distinct formats.
