What is A New Hope about?
The story takes place nineteen years after the Empire forms. Luke meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, joins the Rebel Alliance and begins Jedi training. He becomes part of a mission to rescue Princess Leia from Darth Vader and the Empire. The film’s central movement is from Luke’s life on a remote farm into a larger conflict over the Empire’s power and the Rebellion’s effort to resist it.
How the film shaped its sound and look
Lucasfilm credits the production with forming Industrial Light & Magic, a new visual-effects company, and says the film’s effects and sound design opened new possibilities for motion-picture production. That is Lucasfilm’s assessment of its influence, rather than a quantified measure of the film’s effect on the industry.
#1 Best Overall
The Library of Congress essay on the film describes a mix of influences that includes westerns, war films, pirate pictures, creature features, samurai epics and Saturday-morning serials. It also points to John Williams’s orchestral score as a defining element. This blend helps explain how the film joins a space-fantasy setting to familiar adventure storytelling.
Why its legacy is significant—and debated
A New Hope became a critical and commercial success and has had a lasting place in popular film history. But its influence is not described in only celebratory terms. In a National Film Registry essay, critic Matt Zoller Seitz recounts an argument that Star Wars helped move Hollywood toward broad, effects-driven blockbusters. The essay also records praise for the film; its interpretation is Seitz’s, and the Library of Congress notes that the views expressed do not necessarily represent the institution.
The same essay discusses merchandising as part of the film’s historical reach. Its historical figures should not be treated as current market statistics.
When is the 2027 theatrical return?
Lucasfilm announced that a newly restored version of the classic 1977 theatrical release will return to theaters for a limited time beginning February 19, 2027, as part of the film’s 50th anniversary celebration. The announcement says ticket information—including when and where tickets can be bought—would follow. It does not establish that tickets are on sale now or that this restoration will be released on home media. Check Lucasfilm’s announcement for updates.

How to choose a home-media edition
Official Star Wars home-entertainment information says A New Hope was among eight Star Wars films released on 4K UHD for the first time on March 31, 2020. The official Japanese Star Wars page also lists a Blu-ray plus DVD set and a 4K UHD plus Blu-ray set. Those listings establish formats, not a complete comparison of editions or their present availability.
Before buying, check the exact edition and included cut, the formats and discs in the set, and whether your player supports the disc’s region. The announced 2027 theatrical restoration is a separate future event; the cited home-media information does not promise a disc edition of that restoration.
