Darth Maul survives Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber strike in The Phantom Menace, returns during The Clone Wars as a criminal and political power, and dies years later in Rebels after one final duel with Obi-Wan. His story also continues in the comic Son of Dathomir and the post-Clone Wars series Maul – Shadow Lord. The official sources establish this broad order, but not an exact in-universe year for every event.
Maul’s story in chronological order
The sequence below follows the events in the story, not the order in which every film, series, and comic was released. The screen story runs from The Phantom Menace through The Clone Wars, Solo, and Rebels. Son of Dathomir is a comic tie-in based on unproduced The Clone Wars scripts, not an episode or film. The official Star Wars viewing guide is useful for the screen saga, but it does not turn the comic into a screen appearance.
| Story | Format | Chronological place | What it adds to Maul’s arc |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Phantom Menace | Film | Early in the saga | Maul’s mission for Sidious, duel with Obi-Wan, and apparent death |
| The Clone Wars | Animated series | After The Phantom Menace | Maul’s survival, restoration, revenge, and rise as a criminal-political power |
| Son of Dathomir | Comic | Clone Wars era; bridges his story toward Solo | Additional tie-in context based on unproduced series scripts |
| Solo: A Star Wars Story | Film | After the Clone Wars-era story and before Maul’s final appearance in Rebels | Reveals Maul’s position behind Crimson Dawn |
| Rebels | Animated series | Years after the Clone Wars | Maul’s pursuit of Obi-Wan ends in his death |
| Maul – Shadow Lord | Animated series | After The Clone Wars; its official page does not establish a more exact placement among the later events | A postwar story about Maul’s attempt to rebuild his criminal syndicate |
Who Maul was before the Naboo duel
Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak taken from his origins on Dathomir and trained by Darth Sidious as an apprentice. Sidious uses him as an instrument of the Sith plan, sending him to pursue Queen Amidala. The official Maul Databank entry and Dathomir Databank entry establish his origins and connection to Sidious; the story’s central conflict, however, changes as Maul’s own ambitions and grudges take over.
The Phantom Menace: the mission to Naboo and apparent death
Maul tracks Queen Amidala’s party to Tatooine and briefly clashes with Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. On Naboo, he kills Qui-Gon during the duel at Theed. Obi-Wan Kenobi then defeats Maul by cutting him in two, and Maul falls into the planet’s core. The scene is presented as his death, but it is only an apparent end to his story. The official Darth Maul Biography Gallery recounts the Naboo events.

How Maul survived being cut in half
Lotho Minor: survival through hatred
Maul’s remains are cast away on Lotho Minor, a junk planet. He survives in a broken, feral state, consumed by hatred and thoughts of revenge. He builds spider-like legs from scrap to move across the planet. Savage Opress eventually finds him and brings him back into the story. The official Maul Databank describes this survival and his discovery.
Dathomir: Mother Talzin restores him
Savage takes Maul to Dathomir, where Mother Talzin uses Nightsister magic to restore his mind and gives him mechanical legs. Maul recovers his identity and makes revenge against Obi-Wan a central purpose; he also takes Savage as his apprentice. His return is therefore not simply a matter of replacing his lost lower body: Talzin’s intervention helps restore the mind and sense of self that Maul had lost. The Dathomir Databank describes the planet’s Nightsister connection, while the official Maul overview recounts his restoration.

The Clone Wars: revenge, the Shadow Collective, and Mandalore
From Sith weapon to underworld leader
Maul’s ambitions reach beyond a rematch with Obi-Wan. He assembles criminal organizations—including Death Watch, Black Sun, and the Pykes—into the Shadow Collective. By combining underworld alliances with political maneuvering, he becomes a power in his own right rather than merely a Sith assassin. The official Maul overview and Databank entry describe his criminal rise.
Mandalore and the loss of Savage
Maul takes control of Mandalore after defeating Death Watch leader Pre Vizsla. He uses that power to draw Obi-Wan into the conflict and kills Duchess Satine in front of Kenobi, deepening the personal hatred between them. Darth Sidious then comes to Mandalore, kills Savage Opress, and subdues Maul. Maul survives the encounter but remains an enemy of his former master; his later actions continue to be shaped by resentment toward Sidious as well as his fixation on Obi-Wan. The official overview covers the Mandalore conflict and Sidious’s intervention.

Where Son of Dathomir fits
Son of Dathomir is a comic based on unproduced The Clone Wars scripts. It supplies additional story material from the Clone Wars period and helps connect Maul’s criminal history to his later position behind Crimson Dawn in Solo. It is a tie-in, not a film or animated-series appearance. StarWars.com’s explanation of how Son of Dathomir connects to Solo describes the comic’s basis and role in the story.
Solo: Maul and Crimson Dawn
In Solo: A Star Wars Story, Maul is the power behind the criminal organization Crimson Dawn. Dryden Vos serves as its public-facing leader, while Qi’ra works as Maul’s operative. Maul appears only briefly, but the reveal confirms that he survived the Clone Wars and built influence through organized crime. The official comic-to-film explanation connects this position to the intervening Clone Wars story.

Rebels: Ezra, Tatooine, and Maul’s final duel
Maul’s search for knowledge
Years after the Clone Wars, Maul encounters the young Jedi Ezra Bridger on Malachor. He manipulates Ezra to obtain a Sith holocron and tries to make him an apprentice. Their story continues when Jedi and Sith holocrons are joined and they return to Dathomir seeking knowledge of Obi-Wan. Maul eventually tracks Kenobi to Tatooine. The official Maul overview and Dathomir Databank entry cover these later events.
Obi-Wan ends the pursuit
On Tatooine, Maul and Obi-Wan meet for one last duel. Obi-Wan anticipates Maul’s familiar attack and defeats him. Maul dies in Kenobi’s arms, asking whether the one Obi-Wan protects will avenge them. The duel brings Maul’s personal revenge story to a close. StarWars.com recounts the encounter in its Maul overview.

When does Maul – Shadow Lord take place?
The official Maul – Shadow Lord series page places the story after The Clone Wars. Maul plans to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire and encounters a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan. The page lists April 6, 2026, as the release date. It establishes the series’ broad postwar setting, but not its exact position relative to every event in Solo or Rebels.
