The Academy series, by contrast, is set in the 32nd century: its class is returning to the San Francisco campus after more than 120 years away. A separate 2255 Academy reference concerns the Kelvin alternate timeline, not a later chapter in one continuous prime-timeline history.
Starfleet Academy’s timeline at a glance
| Date or era | Continuity | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2151 | Prime-history context | James Archer’s first Enterprise voyage is later commemorated by Frontier Day. It helped lay groundwork for interspecies cooperation, but it is not the Academy’s founding date. StarTrek.com’s Frontier Day article connects the voyage with the events that led toward the Federation. |
| 2161 | Franchise and prime-history reference | Starfleet Academy is founded in the same year as the Federation. StarTrek.com’s Academy reference describes it as Starfleet’s officer-education center, based in San Francisco; the Frontier Day article also identifies 2161 as the year of the Academy’s formation. |
| 2255 | Kelvin alternate timeline | James Kirk is recruited to Starfleet Academy. This date comes from StarTrek.com’s Kelvin-timeline article, published May 8, 2024, and belongs to that alternate-reality branch. |
| 32nd century | Far-future Academy setting | The Academy series follows a class returning to the San Francisco campus after more than 120 years away. Cadets live and train aboard the USS Athena, which serves as a campus and training ship. StarTrek.com’s official Academy page gives the relative interval, while its Discovery explainer, published October 7, 2020, places Discovery’s later era in the 32nd century. |
Why 2151 is not the Academy’s founding date
In 2151, Archer’s Enterprise begins the interspecies voyage later honored by Frontier Day. That mission is part of the history leading toward greater cooperation and, eventually, the Federation. But the official Academy reference gives the institution’s founding as 2161. The ten-year distinction matters: the Enterprise voyage is important background, not an earlier Academy milestone.
What the Academy timeline says about the new series
The official material places the series in the 32nd century and describes a class returning to the San Francisco campus after more than 120 years away. It does not establish an exact in-universe calendar year for the series. Neither the century nor the campus-return interval is enough to calculate one, so a more precise year should not be treated as settled fact.
The Academy’s far-future setup also changes its physical setting. San Francisco remains the campus, while the USS Athena gives cadets a place to live and train in space. The official page presents the Athena as part of the Academy environment rather than a replacement date or separate continuity.

What cadets study and how they train
A four-year officer education
StarTrek.com’s Academy reference describes a four-year curriculum spanning higher learning, culture, science, personal development, and strategy. Cadets may use satellite facilities and spacebound training facilities, and typically receive a field assignment in their second year.
Areas of study and campus life
The newer Academy page groups study into sciences, command, and operations. It also describes electives, clubs, student organizations, and athletics, presenting the Academy as both a professional training institution and a student community. Its motto is “Ex Astra, Scientia,” translated on the official reference page as “From the stars, knowledge.” Chancellor Nahla Ake’s invitation captures the series’ forward-looking tone: “At Starfleet Academy, you will learn to dream without limitation.”

How to read the dates without mixing continuities
- Use 2161 for the Academy’s founding. It is the explicit institutional date in the official Academy reference.
- Keep 2255 within the Kelvin branch. Kirk’s Academy recruitment in that year is not a prime-timeline continuation of the founding date.
- Use the 32nd century for the Academy series. The official page provides a century and a relative campus-return interval, not an exact year.
- Treat this as a timeline of confirmed milestones, not every Academy appearance. The official pages establish the dates and setting above, but do not provide an episode-by-episode chronology of every cadet or campus event.
