The closest match for “a brand-new Star Trek series with a twist” is Star Trek: Scouts, an animated series designed for preschool viewers and announced as YouTube-first. Its short episodes follow three eight-year-old friends training to become Starfleet Explorers. The headline is ambiguous, though: the same franchise announcement also covered a separate scripted series, a podcast and other projects.
What is the new Star Trek series?
Star Trek: Scouts is an animated series developed and produced by Nickelodeon Digital Studio in association with CBS Studios. The official Star Trek Day announcement described it as the franchise’s first preschool extension and a brand-new, original YouTube-first series.
Its central characters are three eight-year-old friends: JR, Sprocket and Roo. They train to become future Starfleet Explorers, giving the show a younger audience and a different format from the franchise’s scripted dramas.
What is the twist?
The best-supported answer is its preschool focus and short-form, YouTube-first approach—not a plot twist. The announcement specified episodes of three to four minutes and a 20-episode order. At the time of the announcement, two episodes were available on Nickelodeon’s Blaze and the Monster Machines YouTube channel, with the rest planned to roll out into the following year. That describes the announced rollout; it does not establish the series’ current episode availability.

Is Star Trek: Scouts for kids?
Yes. It was announced as a preschool-targeted series. Its young characters, brief episodes and training-for-exploration premise distinguish it from Star Trek’s adult-oriented scripted television, but the announcement does not provide a specific age rating or detailed educational claims.
How Scouts differs from the other Star Trek launches
Several projects appeared in franchise announcements around the same period. They are not all television series, and each has a different destination.

Where can you watch Starfleet Academy?
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a separate scripted series, not another name for Scouts. Paramount’s press listing specified a global Paramount+ premiere on January 15, 2026, with two episodes. The announcement described young cadets pursuing a shared dream while navigating friendships, rivalries and first loves, alongside a threat to the Academy and the Federation. Holly Hunter plays the Academy Chancellor and captain of the U.S.S. Athena; Paul Giamatti is a recurring villain. The cited listing establishes the premiere date, but does not specify regional catalog availability or subscription terms.
What about the Star Trek comics and podcast?
WEBTOON comics
Paramount and WEBTOON announced Stargazers and Recollection as original canon adventures in vertical-scroll format. The announcement set Stargazers for May 17, 2026, and Recollection for summer 2026. Those were announced release windows; the cited information does not confirm their present availability. WEBTOON’s announcement reported approximately 155 million monthly active users across more than 150 countries. That is WEBTOON’s audience figure, not a Star Trek readership estimate.
