There is no official franchise-wide ranking of Star Trek’s pets. Judging them by prominence, staying power, distinctiveness and impact on their stories, Porthos takes the top spot, with Spot close behind. This is an editorial ranking: a list weighted toward recurring presence and recognizability, not an objective measure of which animal is “best.”
How the ranking works
The order favors pets who are recognizable and closely tied to a character over animals whose importance comes from one powerful story. That puts a recurring companion such as Porthos ahead of I-Chaya, whose brief appearance carries a particularly moving sacrifice. The ranking is a judgment, not an official Star Trek list.
The six most memorable Star Trek pets
1. Porthos: Archer’s cheese-loving beagle
Captain Jonathan Archer’s beagle is a steady presence in Star Trek: Enterprise and a reminder of Archer’s life beyond the bridge. Porthos’s fondness for cheese gives him an instantly recognizable comic trait. The official Star Trek 101 entry on Porthos says his name comes from one of the Three Musketeers in Alexandre Dumas’s novel.
2. Spot: Data’s independent cat
Spot stands out because Data’s affection for a creature who does not reliably follow instructions creates a warm contrast with his synthetic nature. In StarTrek.com’s feature on Trek pets, Spot ignores verbal commands and causes mischief while Geordi La Forge is cat-sitting. That mix of independence and comedy makes Spot one of the franchise’s most distinctive pets.

3. Grudge: Book’s queen of the ship
Cleveland Booker’s Maine Coon has a formidable presence, and Book treats her as more than a passenger: she accompanies him into danger, including a radioactive nebula. The official feature describes her as claiming space aboard his ship and sums up her status with the line, “She’s a queen.” A StarTrek.com story about Grudge’s creation identifies Discovery executive producer and writer Jenny Lumet as explaining the character’s origin.
4. Number One: Picard’s vineyard companion
Picard’s pit bull brings a gentler side of the captain into view in Star Trek: Picard. Named for Will Riker’s former role as Picard’s first officer, Number One greets Picard and joins him on walks through the vineyard. In a StarTrek.com interview, Sir Patrick Stewart explained the choice: “I wanted a dog because I have, only in the last four years, renewed my acquaintance with dogs.”

5. I-Chaya: Spock’s childhood sehlat
I-Chaya, Spock’s pet sehlat, appears in The Animated Series episode “Yesteryear.” The character’s place in the ranking owes less to screen time than to story impact: I-Chaya sacrifices himself to protect young Spock from a le-matya. It is one of the most affecting pet storylines in Star Trek, even if the character is less widely visible than the pets above him.
6. The Dog: Tendi’s shape-changing creation
Tendi’s genetically enhanced creation in Lower Decks is the most fantastical entry. StarTrek.com says the Dog can change shape, speak and fly. Its story also has an emotional destination: it leaves the Cerritos and finds a home on Endicronimas V. The official feature’s claims that it is “5% faster” and “6% smarter” are fictional character details, not real-world measurements.

Honorable mentions
StarTrek.com’s 2017 pet roundup includes several other memorable animals: Jil Orra’s Wompat, Miles O’Brien’s tarantula Christina, and Neelix, Reginald Barclay’s cat. That last Neelix is Barclay’s pet, not the Voyager character. The roundup also mentions Gary Seven’s cat Isis and the beloved, pet-like Tribbles. These animals have different roles and levels of characterization, and the official material does not provide enough comparable detail to place them confidently in the six-pet ranking.
For a lighter way to choose a favorite, StarTrek.com asks, “Are you more of a Porthos or a Spot?” Its personality readings are expressly playful, with “no scientific justification whatsoever.”

Why the order could change
A ranking depends on what matters most to the reader. Prioritizing a pet’s emotional effect could move I-Chaya higher; valuing comic originality could do the same for The Dog. The six above are ordered to balance those qualities with broad recognition and sustained presence across the franchise.
