Professor Illa Dax is the latest host of the Dax symbiont, the being associated with Trill and known to Deep Space Nine viewers through earlier hosts Jadzia and Ezri. Illa’s host is partly Cardassian, making her a new person who carries Dax’s history—not Jadzia or Ezri returned unchanged. In Starfleet Academy, Dax’s past gives Illa a personal role in Sam’s search for answers about Benjamin Sisko.
Who is Illa Dax?
Illa Dax is a professor in the 32nd-century setting of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, played by Tawny Newsome. She is the current host of the Dax symbiont, linking her to the earlier Dax hosts Jadzia and Ezri from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The Television Academy describes Dax as having endured across the centuries separating the two series.
That continuity does not make Illa the same individual as Jadzia or Ezri. The connection is the symbiont and the history it carries through successive hosts. The sources establish Jadzia and Ezri as earlier hosts, but do not provide a complete host-by-host history.
Is Illa part Cardassian?
Yes. Newsome confirmed in an interview that Illa’s host is partly Cardassian. The most precise description is: Illa is the current host of the Trill Dax symbiont, and her host is partly Cardassian. Dax is associated with Trill; the Cardassian heritage belongs to Illa’s host, not to the symbiont.

Newsome said the creative team concealed the familiar spots to preserve the reveal. She and co-writer Kirsten Beyer also hoped the choice would open questions about Cardassian culture and its place in this era. The episode does not explain the broader state of Cardassians in the 32nd century, so Illa’s heritage is a story opening rather than a full account of that culture.
How Illa connects Starfleet Academy to Deep Space Nine
The connection is more than a familiar name. Dax has a history with Benjamin Sisko, and that history makes Illa a fitting person to help guide Sam as she investigates Sisko’s legacy. Newsome said she and Beyer shaped Illa to shepherd Sam through the story. Dax also made it plausible for Illa to possess a manuscript by Jake Sisko, Benjamin’s son.

The Dax reveal comes late in “Series Acclimation Mil,” the fifth episode of Starfleet Academy’s debut season. Its timing lets Illa’s role in Sam’s story develop before the episode makes the legacy connection explicit. The episode also features Jake Sisko and closes with an excerpt from an Avery Brooks spoken-word recording.
What does the episode say about Sisko’s fate?
“Series Acclimation Mil” honors Deep Space Nine without settling the enduring question of what ultimately happened to Captain Benjamin Sisko—or whether he received Sam’s message. The Television Academy’s interview with Kerrice Brooks, who plays Sam, captures the uncertainty: “Hopefully, he got it. We don’t know.”

Executive producer and co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman told SYFY Wire that a definitive answer would risk disappointing viewers, whatever the answer was. He argued that leaving the matter open respects the point of Deep Space Nine’s ending. Newsome has offered a more personal reading of Jake’s account, saying it resolves the part of the mystery that matters to her; that is her interpretation, not a definitive canon ruling.
Kurtzman described the episode as a love letter to Deep Space Nine and Avery Brooks. The approach lets the story revisit the Sisko family’s emotional importance while keeping Sam’s investigation—and its unanswered question—at the center.

Where to watch the earlier Dax and Sisko stories
Deep Space Nine ran for seven seasons, from 1993 to 1999, according to TV Guide’s interview introduction. Viewers who want the background to Illa’s connection can look to the series for the earlier Dax hosts and their relationship with Sisko. The cited franchise announcement named Paramount+ as the home of Starfleet Academy when it was announced, but that announcement does not establish current availability by territory.
