Star Trek: Section 31 Review: An Embarrassment from Start to End

Michelle Yeoh’s return as Georgiou is the chief draw, but Star Trek: Section 31 underdelivers on its covert mission, character story and franchise fit.

Star Trek: Section 31 has a terrific asset in Michelle Yeoh’s commanding return as Philippa Georgiou, but its covert-action premise and boundary-pushing tone do not add up to a satisfying Star Trek story. It is a poor fit for viewers looking for the franchise’s usual sense of discovery or thoughtful exploration; Yeoh’s presence is the main reason curious fans might still give it a try.

What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?

The 2025 Paramount+ original movie brings back Emperor Philippa Georgiou, played by Michelle Yeoh, whom viewers first met in Star Trek: Discovery. The official synopsis sends Georgiou into a secret Starfleet division charged with protecting the United Federation of Planets, while forcing her to confront the sins of her past. The premise sets up a character study about power and accountability inside a covert-operations story, but the premise alone does not ensure that either part gets enough room to develop.

Olatunde Osunsanmi directed and Craig Sweeny wrote the film. Its principal cast also includes Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Robert Kazinsky, Kacey Rohl, Sven Ruygrok, James Hiroyuki Liao and Humberly Gonzalez. StarTrek.com’s film page and Paramount’s announcement confirm the premise, cast and release details.

Does the story work?

The central problem is the gap between what the film’s ideas promise and what its story appears to make of them. Georgiou’s past gives the mission an obvious moral dimension: a character shaped by brutal power is now tied to an organization that claims to protect the Federation. That tension could make a covert Starfleet assignment feel consequential. Instead, the story is widely criticized for giving its concepts too little depth and for leaving its dramatic stakes underdeveloped.

That weakness matters especially in a film centered on a character with a complicated history. A mission can provide momentum, but without enough space for its consequences to register, it risks feeling like a sequence of genre beats rather than an arc that meaningfully tests Georgiou. Angelica Jade Bastién of New York Magazine/Vulture called it “sloppy, misguided, and frankly rote, overstuffed with concepts that it only superficially explores,” in a review listed by Rotten Tomatoes. That is a sharp summary of why an ambitious setup can still feel thin in execution.

Michelle Yeoh is the film’s strongest reason to watch

Yeoh gives Georgiou the authority and dark wit that make the character compelling in the first place. The problem is not a lack of screen presence; it is that the movie’s material does not consistently turn that presence into a substantial character journey. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter, in a review listed by Metacritic, praised Yeoh’s “commanding and darkly amusing screen presence” while arguing that the film lets her down.

That distinction is the fairest way to assess the performance: Yeoh remains a draw, but a strong lead cannot by herself make the story’s ideas feel fully explored. Viewers primarily interested in seeing Yeoh reprise Georgiou may find enough to hold their attention. Those looking for a rewarding continuation of the character’s development are more likely to feel the film has not done justice to its lead.

Does its tone fit Star Trek?

Section 31 leans toward covert action and a darker, more irreverent register than many viewers associate with Star Trek. That shift is not automatically a mistake: a franchise can explore secrecy, moral compromise and less idealistic corners of its universe. The question is whether the change in tone serves a clear purpose and whether the story makes those darker choices matter. Here, the tonal approach is one of the reasons the film feels disconnected from the franchise’s more exploratory and philosophical traditions.

Reaction is not unanimous. NPR critic David Bianculli described the movie as “enjoyable enough” and said it “fits nicely into the ‘Star Trek’ canon,” according to Rotten Tomatoes. That positive response shows that some viewers find the combination of Georgiou, action and franchise lore entertaining. But enjoyment of its lead or genre approach is different from feeling that its themes have been made persuasive or that its place in Star Trek has been earned.

How was Star Trek: Section 31 received?

The aggregate response is strongly negative, though aggregator scores are snapshots of the reviews and ratings on those services, not a poll of every viewer. On October 8, 2026, the pages showed:

Aggregator Critic score Audience or user score Snapshot date
Rotten Tomatoes 24% Tomatometer from 51 reviews 15% Popcornmeter from 1,000+ ratings October 8, 2026
Metacritic 37/100 from 16 critic reviews (“Generally Unfavorable”) 1.7/10 from 145 user ratings (“Overwhelming Dislike”) October 8, 2026

These figures can change as more reviews and ratings appear. Metacritic’s critic-review breakdown at the time was one positive, 11 mixed and four negative. The scores help explain why the movie has been received poorly, but the individual reviews make the divide clearer: critics could find Yeoh engaging or the film entertaining while still objecting to its storytelling, tone or franchise fit. Is Star Trek: Section 31 worth watching?

For most Star Trek viewers, it is easy to pass on. The film’s central hook and Yeoh’s performance have more promise than the storytelling delivers, and its darker action-oriented approach does not make a convincing case for what this corner of Starfleet adds to the franchise. That makes the movie a frustrating showcase for Georgiou rather than a strong standalone Star Trek story.
