In “Dos Cerritos,” Mariner faces a version of herself who rules through fear; in “Shades of Green,” Tendi and her sister D’Erika discover the cost of avoiding a difficult conversation.
What old lesson does the premiere revisit?
Communication is not just a way to resolve a plot problem in these episodes. It is a measure of how the characters have grown. James Whitbrook’s October 24, 2024, io9 review argues that the premiere asks its heroes to speak openly with the people they care about and work alongside. The two stories approach that idea from different directions: one through a frightening model of command, the other through a strained family relationship.
The season-five opener consists of “Dos Cerritos” and “Shades of Green.” The review’s interpretation is that both episodes test whether characters can replace fear, silence, or protective evasions with candor.
How “Dos Cerritos” turns Mariner’s fear into a leadership test
The Cerritos crew is trying to repair a “space pothole” linked to fissures into parallel realities when they are pulled into an alternate version of their ship. The review treats this reality not merely as a strange detour but as a possible future for the characters.

That future is unsettling. Alternate Rutherford has extensive cybernetics that dampen his emotions and memories for workplace performance. Alternate Boimler is a confident, bearded second in command. The ship is commanded by Captain Becky Freeman—an alternate Mariner whose authority rests on fear and violence.
Becky embodies what Mariner worries leadership could make of her: someone who loses valued parts of herself in order to command. The contrast gives Mariner a choice. Rather than imitate Becky or retreat from the problem, she talks to the alternate crew and helps expose the captain’s abuse. In Whitbrook’s reading, her willingness to act and communicate shows change: becoming a leader need not mean becoming cruel.

Why “Shades of Green” puts honesty between Tendi and D’Erika
The second episode shifts to Tendi’s Orion family and her work with her sister, D’Erika. Their mission includes recovering an Orion warship, encountering Blue Orions, and entering a space race after the ruling Orion powers respond to Tendi’s conduct.
The emotional conflict is closer to home. Tendi and D’Erika avoid an honest conversation about D’Erika’s pregnancy and the dangers involved in their mission. Tendi tries to protect her sister without fully talking to her, and that silence complicates matters during the race.

The sisters eventually speak frankly about their feelings and the paths they have chosen. They part ways, but with greater respect for one another. Their lives are diverging; the episode’s resolution is not that they must choose the same future, but that they can acknowledge the difference without letting it erase their bond.
How the two stories work together
“Dos Cerritos” makes communication a question of power: can Mariner challenge a harmful leader without reproducing that leader’s behavior? “Shades of Green” makes it a question of care: can Tendi support her sister without deciding for her or withholding what needs to be said?

In both cases, good intentions are not enough. Mariner must speak up to help the alternate crew, while Tendi’s protective instinct causes trouble when it substitutes for candor. The premiere’s lesson is therefore practical, not simply sentimental: honest conversation gives people a chance to respond to one another as they are, rather than as someone else fears or assumes they should be.

The review also notes Mariner and Boimler visiting a planet preparing to join the Federation after giving up capitalism, and T’Lyn trying to comfort Rutherford while Tendi is away. These beats broaden the premiere’s setting and relationships, but the review’s central through-line remains the characters’ willingness to communicate as the series enters its final season.

What the review does—and does not—establish
This is an interpretation of the two opening episodes, not a claim that every viewer will read them the same way. Whitbrook’s io9 review was published October 24, 2024, and reported that the premiere was streaming on Paramount+ at that time. That historical note does not establish current availability or where the episodes can be watched today.
