Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell and Corey Feldman reunited in 2026 for screenings and tour events marking 40 years since Stand by Me. River Phoenix, who played Chris Chambers, was missing from the gathering: he died in 1993. The surviving actors remembered him as kind and as someone who helped hold their young group together, with an empty chair on stage serving as a tribute.
Who reunited for the anniversary?
Wheaton, O’Connell and Feldman spent a weekend together attending screenings shortly before the Associated Press published its report on March 25, 2026. Feldman described the gathering as something they had never quite had before: “But there’s never been a time that the three of us just hung out … it was like a high school reunion, but only for three people that really got it.” He also said he was “very grateful to be back with my bros.” The Associated Press reported on the reunion and the film’s 40th-anniversary return to theaters.
The film premiered in 1986. The 2026 events included screenings and post-film conversations; one confirmed event took place at Strathmore on March 14, 2026, with Feldman, O’Connell and Wheaton. Strathmore’s archived event listing confirms the screening and conversation.
Why River Phoenix was absent—and how the cast remembered him
Phoenix, who played Chris Chambers, died in 1993 and could not attend. The reunion’s sadness was not presented as speculation about what he might have thought; it came through the surviving actors’ memories of him and the deliberate space they left for him on stage.

Wheaton recalled Phoenix’s place in the group: “He kind of held us together in this way that I still don’t understand.” O’Connell remembered him as “so welcoming of everyone and just the kindest kid I ever met.” Parade’s anniversary-tour report published those reflections.
The empty chair as a tribute
One chair on stage was left empty in Phoenix’s memory. The image carried an earlier connection: at a 25th-anniversary screening, the cast recalled director Rob Reiner saying there “feels like there should be a chair here for River,” according to the Associated Press. Leaving the chair open at the 40th-anniversary gathering made that remembrance visible without pretending Phoenix was there.

What the reunion meant to the surviving cast
The gathering also came after Reiner’s death in December 2025. Wheaton said of the cast’s response to that loss, “My first thought was, ‘I am so glad that I have a place to land with my grief.’” He was referring to Reiner, not Phoenix. O’Connell connected the planned tour to remembering both men: “Now, when we take this on the road, I feel like we have a duty to remind everybody who River was; who Rob was. What they meant, how much they helped us, how much they changed us.”
That combination of reunion and remembrance framed the anniversary: three actors could gather again, while honoring the friend and director who were no longer there.

Are the 40th-anniversary events still happening?
The confirmed Strathmore screening was on March 14, 2026, and the Associated Press described a multi-city tour in its March 25 report. Those dates are now past. The available event information does not establish any future screenings or ticket availability, so check current listings before making plans.
