Season 2 gives him a much larger role, but the series does not provide a complete biography or explain what made him this way.
Who is the Recruiter in Squid Game?
Gong Yoo plays the Recruiter, the man in a sharp suit who approaches Gi-hun in a subway station and challenges him to play ddakji. In Season 1, that encounter is brief, but it establishes his function: he finds people in need of money and offers them a chance to win it through a game. Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide describes him as the man playing ddakji in the subway and notes that Gong Yoo appeared in only one Season 1 episode.
The game is not simply an invitation. The Recruiter uses it to identify and entice potential players, making the cheerful form of a children’s pastime part of a predatory pitch. Season 1 does not reveal much about his private life or explain his motives beyond his work for the organization.
How does his story expand in Season 2?
Gi-hun’s return to the outside world leads him to search across the city for the Recruiter, hoping to reach the people behind the games. The Season 2 cast guide identifies this search as part of Gi-hun’s effort to find the man who recruited him. The role shifts from a brief encounter to an active obstacle in Gi-hun’s pursuit.

Season 2 also shows the Recruiter using violence and coercive games, including Russian Roulette and Rock, Paper, Scissors Minus One. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes feature documents the challenges and quotes Gong Yoo describing the latter scene: “The scene where my character tormented people with Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One was incredibly intense and impactful.” The actor’s comment is about the filmed scene; it does not supply a backstory or diagnosis for the character.
That expansion makes his screen record more disturbing, but it still does not answer basic biographical questions. The episodes and official material cited here do not establish his childhood, earlier occupation, or the events that led him to join the organization.

What is known about his connection to Captain Park?
Netflix’s Season 3 ending explainer mentions a photo of Captain Park with the vengeful Recruiter. The image establishes an association within the show’s visual evidence, but the explainer does not account for the full relationship. It is not enough on its own to infer how or when they met, what their connection involved, or what motivated the Recruiter.
What does the American Recruiter reveal about the role?
Season 3’s finale introduces Cate Blanchett as an American recruiter. Netflix’s final-scene coverage quotes creator Hwang Dong-hyuk explaining the choice: “We thought having a woman as a recruiter would be more dramatic and intriguing.” He also said, “If Gong Yoo is the Korean Recruiter, I thought she would be the perfect fit as the American Recruiter, bringing a short but gripping and impactful ending to the story.”

- Youngh-hee Doll: Precisely crafted 29cm tall figure. Dressed in a simple orange frilly dress, her appearance contrasts sharply with the series' dark and deadly games
- Press his head and throw the red light, green light: as in the series
- Precisely crafted figure: Youngh-hee doll from Red Light, Green Light Squid Game. This iconic character from the series measures 29 cm. It has rotating head movements, two motion sensors and bright eyes. It is equipped with a speaker that reproduces the original sounds of the series
- Take the challenge: play Red Light, Green Light as in the series. Place the doll back and press down on her head. Go to the starting line and, when it turns your head, do not move. The doll is equipped with two separate motion sensors. If you are detected, she will turn her head towards you and her eyes will light up. The first one who presses on the doll's head without being spotted wins
- Squid Game contains adult themes and violence - not suitable for children
The appearance shows that recruitment is an organizational function extending beyond Gong Yoo’s character. It does not, by itself, explain the organization’s full structure or establish that every recruiter behaves exactly as he does.
The Recruiter across the series
| Season or appearance | What the series shows | What it establishes about motive |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | A brief appearance: he approaches Gi-hun with ddakji and recruits him. | He works to bring players into the games; his personal reasons are not explained. |
| Season 2 | Gi-hun searches for him, and the Recruiter’s violent, coercive games are shown in greater detail. | The expanded role reveals more of his conduct, not a complete biography or the cause of it. |
| Season 3 finale | Cate Blanchett appears as an American recruiter; an ending explainer also mentions a photo linking Captain Park and the vengeful Recruiter. | The role exists beyond one man, while the photo’s full significance remains unexplained in the cited coverage. |
What remains unknown about his history?
The series presents a morbid on-screen record: the Recruiter lures vulnerable people into a deadly system and, in Season 2, subjects others to violent games. That record is not the same as a fully told personal history. The official material cited here does not establish a specific trauma, past occupation, or real-world historical inspiration that explains his behavior. Treating any such explanation as fact goes beyond what the show and its official coverage establish.
