Squid Game Season 2 makes Gi-hun’s return about more than surviving another contest. In a September 2024 interview, creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk described a more serious, darker Gi-hun, while actor Lee Jung-jae called his return a “game-within-a-game”: Gi-hun plans to pursue the people running the competition from inside it.
Why does Gi-hun go back into the game?
Three years after Season 1, Gi-hun is changed by what happened to him. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lee Jung-jae attributed Gi-hun’s effort to stop the games to survivor’s guilt. The character has also learned that his mother died while he was away and that his daughter moved to the United States.
Gi-hun first tries to act from outside the competition, but those efforts fail. Hwang said he then decides to re-enter and take down the operation from within. His goal is no longer simply to win: the organizers, rather than only the other contestants, are part of the target.
What does “heavier, darker” mean for Gi-hun?
Hwang contrasted the returning Gi-hun with the foolish, clumsy, sometimes childish man viewers saw at the start of Season 1. As he put it: “You will get to see a much heavier, darker side of Gi-hun.” The description comes from the creator, not from a claim of universal critical consensus.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The shift is tied to the character’s losses and his decision to challenge the people behind the games. Instead of entering with the same outlook as before, Gi-hun returns carrying the consequences of the first season and a plan to confront the system that put him and the other players in danger.
What is the “game-within-a-game”?
Lee’s phrase describes the extra purpose behind Gi-hun’s participation. He is inside the contest as a player, but he is also trying to get close to its organizers and disrupt their operation. Lee said: “It could almost be described as a game-within-a-game for Gi-hun.” It is a description of Gi-hun’s premise, not a separate official game format.

Will Season 2 have new games?
Lee said, “Most of the games will be new this time around.” Hwang described the games broadly as children’s games with versions recognizable in different parts of the world. The interview does not establish a complete list, so those comments should not be taken as a guide to every game in the season.
Hwang also said he wanted the competition to return to the series’ interest in capitalist society and in how people who lose are treated. That is his account of the season’s creative intent, rather than an independent sociological finding.

Which Season 1 characters return?
The interview names three returning performers alongside Lee Jung-jae: Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the recruiter. It also names a broader group of new performers, but the central premise described in the interview is Gi-hun’s attempt to confront the operation that created the games.
