Netflix said the season drew 68 million views in its first week and ranked No. 1 in 92 countries. That record is specific to Netflix’s premiere-week view metric; it does not establish a lead in every measure of debut audiences.
What record did Squid Game Season 2 break?
In a December 31, 2024 report, Netflix said Season 2 received 68 million views in its premiere week, setting the record for the most views for a show in that window. Netflix also reported that the season ranked No. 1 in 92 countries during its debut period. Netflix’s launch-period report is the source for both figures.
So the “biggest TV debut” description is supported when it means Netflix’s own reported premiere-week views. The cited figures do not compare independent audience estimates, unique viewers, households, hours watched, or completion rates across every service and title.
How to read Netflix’s different view totals
Netflix later reported 87 million views for Season 2 across the second half of 2024, in a report published in 2025. That is a separate, longer reporting period: the season premiered six days before the half-year window ended. Netflix also said it accounted for 0.7% of viewing in that period. These figures are not alternatives to the 68 million premiere-week figure; they describe different windows. Netflix’s second-half 2024 viewing report provides the period totals.

In a July 1, 2025 recap, Netflix described Season 2 as its third most popular show of all time and said it entered the Most Popular Non-English TV list within three days. Those are later catalog rankings, not measures of its first-week debut; all-time positions can change as viewing accumulates. Netflix’s July 2025 recap gives that later context.
