Spoiler-light review. Season 2 of Squid Game has a strong engine and a weak frame around it. Gi-hun returns to the deadly competition determined to stop it, but the season takes a long route back to the games—and its repeated voting debates and abrupt ending make the story feel more like an extended setup than a complete installment. The contests themselves remain compelling, especially when survival forces players into alliances and rivalries.
What Season 2 is trying to do
Premiering globally on Netflix on December 26, 2024, the seven-episode season brings Gi-hun back to the competition with a new purpose: to stop it from continuing. He faces the Front Man and a new group of contestants, while the players confront a recurring choice about whether to keep competing or stop and divide the accumulated prize. Netflix lists all seven episodes as streaming.
That vote gives the season a clear dramatic question beyond who will survive: what do people owe one another when the rules offer a chance to leave, but the money grows with every death? The idea fits Squid Game. The problem is not that the season has little to say; it is that it returns to the same debate so often that the point loses force.
The games are still the best part
The new contests supply the season’s sharpest suspense. The Atlantic found them more diabolical and intriguing than Gi-hun’s earlier trials, and the games’ visual invention gives each round an immediate identity. Their deeper value, though, is not just spectacle. Rules and danger force people to make choices in front of one another: whom to trust, whom to exclude, and how far to go to stay alive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those pressures make the ensemble more than a collection of player types. Alliances and rivalries change how contestants read each other, and a game can reveal a character through a decision more efficiently than a long explanation could. That interpersonal tension is why the set pieces continue to work even when the story between them slows down.
On novelty, the season is more mixed. The contests can be visually distinct and gripping without wholly escaping the franchise’s established pattern: a deadly game, a moral test, and a spectacle built around watching people respond under pressure. The Atlantic emphasizes their intrigue; TIME also praises the visual identity, but the reviews leave room to ask whether the rounds feel genuinely fresh or like an effective variation on a known formula. Their strongest distinction is often what they draw out of the players, not a wholesale reinvention of the premise.

The voting has a good idea and too much airtime
The continue-or-stop vote turns collective choice into a recurring source of conflict. A majority can determine whether the competition proceeds, but every ballot is also shaped by personal need, fear, and the temptation of a larger prize. TIME reads this as a development of the series’ interest in majority rule; it is a useful way to make the contestants’ complicity part of the drama.
But the scenes keep revisiting the same arguments. The Atlantic calls the deliberations tedious, and TIME says they run too long and become monotonous. Instead of making each vote feel like a fresh moral reckoning, repetition blunts the tension. The season’s theme is legible well before the debates are over.

The route back to the arena is slow
Between the games, the season spends substantial time on the hunt and on setting up what comes next. TIME singles out two plodding early episodes and describes the ending as abrupt, leaving the season feeling like a long teaser for a following installment. The Atlantic likewise identifies drag around the voting and the connective story. The result is an uneven rhythm: the contests create urgency, then the surrounding material repeatedly interrupts it without building equal momentum.
That imbalance matters at the season level. A cliffhanger can be an intentional bridge, but here the abrupt stop makes the installment feel less like a story with its own shape and more like the first half of a larger one. The games deliver local payoffs; the season’s broader arc is less satisfying.

Performances and the series’ wider ideas
The premise continues to connect its fictional brutality to recognizable pressures: money, power, and the choices people make when institutions turn survival into competition. Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk described the season’s relation to the present this way: “The world is crazy now. And this [season] is crazy because it’s based on the world as we live in now.” That ambition is clearest when the game rules expose how individual self-interest and collective decisions collide.
Lee Jung-jae’s account of playing Gi-hun offers a useful lens on the character’s new purpose: “In order to call ourselves upright citizens or human beings, we really have to be true to our conscience.” The season’s best moments put that question under pressure rather than simply stating it. Its voting scenes sometimes explain the moral conflict more times than necessary, but the underlying tension remains worthwhile.

Is Squid Game Season 2 worth watching?
If the games are what you come for, yes: the trials remain suspenseful, visually memorable, and capable of revealing character through action. If you want a tightly paced season with a self-contained payoff, the long setup, repeated votes, and abrupt cliffhanger are substantial frustrations. This is a season whose best parts work better than the whole they are assembled into.
The scale of its audience is not the same thing as a critical verdict. Netflix reported 192.6 million views for Season 2 and ranked it the third-largest season of a Netflix TV show as of June 23, 2025. That is a dated, platform-reported figure and ranking, not a current leaderboard or an independent audience measurement.
