Spoilers for the Season 2 finale. “Ruined” is too absolute: Squid Game Season 2 still has arresting production design, strong performances and a more alliance-driven game. But its final twist helps make the season feel unfinished. The reveal is not simply that Young-il is the Front Man; it is that Gi-hun never learns the truth before the story cuts off in the middle of a failed rebellion.
What happens in Squid Game Season 2?
After abandoning his plan to leave for the United States, Gi-hun returns to the survival contest. Netflix’s official season synopsis says the new participants compete for 45.6 billion won. Gi-hun’s goal is no longer just to survive: he wants to find out who runs the games, why they exist and how to end them.
The season has seven episodes, all streaming on Netflix, according to Netflix Tudum. Its central tension comes from Gi-hun’s attempt to turn the other players against the system while the game’s organizers keep drawing them back into its logic.
Why the latest twist makes the season feel unfinished
Spoilers from here through the end of the season.
Gi-hun’s allies launch an armed rebellion against the people operating the contest. It fails. Front Man kills Jung-bae, Gi-hun’s friend, and the season leaves Gi-hun devastated without resolving the larger game. A mid-credits glimpse points toward Season 3, but it does not turn this stopping point into a self-contained finale.

The betrayal makes the ending sharper: Young-il, whom Gi-hun has trusted as an ally, is actually the Front Man. Gi-hun does not know this when Season 2 ends. As actor Lee Jung-jae put it in Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer, “I don’t think Gi-hun knows the truth yet.” The audience is given the dramatic irony, but the character who needs to confront it cannot respond to it in this season.
That is the difference between a twist and a payoff. Young-il’s identity changes how the audience reads the alliance, but the finale stops before Gi-hun can discover the betrayal or act on it. Jung-bae’s death gives the failed rebellion a painful cost; the cut-off leaves that grief and the fight against the game as unfinished business for the next chapter. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk described the Front Man’s intention as “Because that was his intention and plan all along.” He also said, “You realize that Gi-hun’s attempts to put an end to the game have failed — in two ways,” in the same explainer.

For some critics, the abruptness is the problem rather than the reveal itself. TIME’s review calls the ending “frustratingly unfinished” and argues that the season takes too long to reach the games, then repeats a cycle of play, murder and rage. It also notes that Jun-ho’s parallel investigation recedes once the competition begins. The Atlantic’s review similarly finds Gi-hun’s revenge quest slow and the repeated votes on whether to leave monotonous. Its underlying question is whether this cliffhanger shows enough story progress to justify postponing the payoff.
What Season 2 still does well
The season’s games are not simply a repeat of individual tests of luck. The Atlantic notes that the new contests push players into alliances and rivalries earlier than the largely individual challenges it contrasts with Season 1. That gives the expanded cast more opportunities to reveal loyalties and character under pressure.

Those alliances also strengthen the season’s moral conflict. Gi-hun believes the players can choose solidarity, but the organizers’ incentives and the growing prize repeatedly test that belief. The voting scenes can feel repetitive, as critics have argued, yet the mechanism keeps making the players’ choices part of the contest rather than a problem confined to the arena.
TIME, despite its criticism of the pacing and ending, praises the show’s visual distinction and acting, and welcomes its better-developed female characters. Those strengths help explain why Season 2 can remain compelling moment to moment even as its overall structure feels incomplete.

How Season 2 compares with the first season
The clearest difference is emphasis. Season 2 brings alliances and rivalries into the games sooner, shifting attention from the individual challenge toward how players organize, trust and turn on one another. Its repeated votes add another layer: the players debate leaving while the contest’s incentives keep pulling them back.
But the season’s shape is less satisfying if you want a conclusion at the end of each installment. It spends much of its run re-establishing the competition and building toward a revolt, then ends during that revolt rather than after a decisive confrontation. The supplied critical reviews support that judgment about pacing and closure; they do not establish a systematic episode-by-episode comparison.

It depends on what you want from a season finale. If a season should deliver a meaningful resolution, the Young-il reveal paired with the failed rebellion is a frustrating place to stop: Gi-hun does not know who betrayed him, Jung-bae is dead, and the game continues. If you are willing to treat Season 2 as the opening half of a larger story, the twist creates strong dramatic irony and raises the stakes for what follows.
Netflix reported 192.6 million views for Season 2 in an article published June 23, 2025, calling it the third-largest season of a Netflix TV show. That is Netflix’s reported figure at that date, not an independently audited audience total or a current ranking. It establishes substantial reported viewership, not that audiences agreed on the finale.
