Squid Game Season 2 makes division part of the game’s visible machinery: players’ X and O badges show which side they have chosen. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says the season explores how choices create conflict and division, and determine which side people join. The struggle to overcome those divisions is a useful way to read Gi-hun’s return—but it is an interpretation of the season’s story, not a direct quote from Hwang.
What is Season 2 about?
Season 2 premiered on Dec. 26, 2024. Netflix’s launch guide described Gi-hun as returning to the game; a later Netflix retrospective says the story jumps three years ahead and that he reenters seeking vengeance for fellow players and determined to stop the games. Netflix reported the season’s availability on its service at the time of the launch guide; that does not establish current availability in every country. Netflix’s Season 2 guide and its later retrospective provide that context.
Why does Hwang frame the season around divisions?
In a Nov. 5, 2024 interview with Netflix Tudum, creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk said: “I also wanted to tell the story about how the different choices we make create different conflicts and divisions.” He added: “I wanted to talk about how the choices we make decide which side we end up on.” He also said, “We have to be cautious when making choices, and we have to accept the consequences [of those choices].” Those statements ground the season’s divisions theme in Hwang’s own explanation of his aims. How do the X and O badges make division visible?
Hwang describes the X and O badges on players’ tracksuits as a way to announce decisions on a divisive matter. A choice that might otherwise remain private becomes legible to the other players: people can see who is aligned with which side. The badges therefore do more than mark a preference. As a dramatic device, they make alignment public, invite players to judge one another, and turn individual decisions into a visible group divide. The public signaling is established in Hwang’s interview; the consequences for pressure and responsibility are an interpretation of how the device works in the story.

Why does Gi-hun return to the game?
Gi-hun does not return as the same man who survived Season 1. In the Netflix interview, actor Lee Jung-jae says his character’s state in Season 2 differs sharply from before, while Hwang describes Gi-hun as broken by what he witnessed. That change helps explain why his return is more than a second attempt to survive. Netflix’s later summary characterizes his aims as vengeance for fellow players and stopping the games. His determination puts the question of how to respond to violence alongside the season’s questions about choice and division.
Is the season’s conflict a story about overcoming division?
That phrase is best understood as a reading of the dramatic conflict, not a promise that the characters can simply set their differences aside. The X/O system makes choices and sides explicit; Gi-hun’s effort to stop the games gives the story a countervailing goal. But the material Netflix attributes to Hwang establishes an interest in choices, conflict, division, and consequences—not one definitive political allegory or a single answer to how divisions should be resolved. The story’s tension lies in asking what people choose when group loyalties and moral responsibility collide.

What Season 2 merchandise did Netflix announce?
In December 2024, Netflix announced a PUMA collaboration featuring a Season 2 T7 tracksuit, as well as limited-edition collectible collaborations. The announcement documents those partnerships at that time; it does not verify present-day stock, a current Amazon listing, or whether a particular costume listing is officially licensed.
