Its premise is deliberately unsettling; its shifting mix of black comedy, horror and allegory makes it harder to pin down than a conventional genre film. The film was known as Samuel’s Travels around its 2021 Fantastic Fest premiere, before its listed U.S. release in 2022.
What is Squeal about?
Samuel, a foreigner searching for his father in the Latvian countryside, has a minor road accident involving a piglet. He meets Kirke, the daughter of a pig farmer, but the encounter leads to captivity: Samuel is forced to work on the farm and chained with the pigs. The published synopsis describes a seemingly magical piglet helping him move toward freedom and love.
That setup gives the film its central tension. The farm is not merely an unusual backdrop; it makes confinement, coerced labor and the boundary between human and animal part of the story’s fabric. The film’s fable-like premise invites interpretation, but it does not need to be reduced to a single allegorical key.
Is Squeal a horror movie or a dark comedy?
It is best approached as a blend rather than assigned one definitive genre. Catalogs and reviewers place it variously among comedy, drama, horror, black comedy and dark fable. The macabre situations can carry an absurd edge, while the captivity premise gives the humor an uncomfortable underside. Viewers looking for sustained conventional horror or a straightforward comedy may find that the film keeps changing registers.

Cinefantastique reviewer Steve Biodrowski captures that in-between quality: “Not quite fairy tale or horror film, SQUEAL offers a fanciful allegory for fans of art house cinema.” That is his critical judgment, not an official genre label. Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup records readings of the film through coercive work structures, abusive relationships, animal abuse and freedom; those are interpretive lenses, not a declared explanation of the filmmakers’ intent.
What makes the animal-farm setting matter?
The pig farm turns questions of power and dependence into physical circumstances. Samuel is placed among the animals and made to work, so the story’s images of captivity and labor are difficult to separate from its dark humor or fable-like distance. That friction is also what gives the film its documentary-adjacent interest for viewers drawn to stories about systems of control: Squeal uses fictional, heightened imagery rather than presenting itself as a documentary account.

The animal imagery can be disturbing, and the film’s critical reception includes discussion of animal abuse. Viewers sensitive to that material should treat the farm premise as a meaningful content consideration, rather than assume the comic elements make it gentle viewing.
Who made Squeal?
Aik Karapetian directed and co-wrote the film with Aleksandr Rodionov. Kevin Janssens plays Samuel, Laura Siliņa plays Kirke, and Aigars Vilims is also among the principal cast. Inese Boka-Grube and Gints Grube are listed as producers.

Squeal is an 85-minute Latvian and Belgian production. Fantastic Fest screened it in 2021 under the title Samuel’s Travels; U.S. release listings date its theatrical and streaming release to August 19, 2022. These dates describe the festival-era title and U.S. listings, not necessarily every territory’s release history.
How was it received, and where can you watch it?
Rotten Tomatoes showed an 88% Tomatometer based on eight critic reviews when its page was accessed in 2026. That is a small, changeable aggregator snapshot, not a definitive measure of the film’s quality or a broad audience consensus.

It is a more natural fit for viewers who enjoy art-house fables that mix disturbing imagery with black comedy than for anyone seeking a neatly defined horror plot or realistic farm drama. Its most distinctive choice is to let the pig-farm setting shape a story about confinement and the possibility of escape, without smoothing away the unease that comes with it. The result is an intentionally odd, macabre film whose genre instability is part of its appeal.
