Spotify reported that it paid more than $10 billion in music royalties in 2024. That is the company’s aggregate figure for payments into the music-rights system—not $10 billion paid directly to individual artists. How much any artist or songwriter ultimately receives depends on rights ownership and agreements with labels, distributors, publishers, and other intermediaries.
What Spotify’s $10 billion figure means
Spotify’s March 2025 Loud & Clear report says it paid more than $10 billion to the music industry in 2024. This is Spotify’s reported aggregate royalty total. The sources cited here do not establish that the total was independently audited.
The figure describes payments to rightsholders and the intermediaries through which royalties flow. It does not show what any one performer, songwriter, label, publisher, or distributor retained, and it is not a recipient-by-recipient breakdown of the year’s payments.
Did Spotify pay $10 billion directly to artists?
No. Spotify’s explanation distinguishes royalties for recordings from royalties for musical compositions. Recording royalties are owed to the sound-recording rightsholder, often a label or distributor that delivered the music to Spotify. An artist’s share depends on the agreement with that entity.

Publishing royalties concern the composition and songwriter or composition-owner rights. They flow through publishers, performing-rights organizations, collecting societies, or other relevant channels. A song can involve different people and organizations on the recording and composition sides, so the headline total cannot be treated as a direct-payment total for musicians.
Spotify’s royalty guide reports that more than 71,000 artists generated at least $10,000 from Spotify alone in 2024. That threshold is a Spotify-reported figure; it does not mean every artist received that amount personally after contractual splits, nor does it reveal the earnings of artists below the threshold.

How much does Spotify pay per stream?
There is no single fixed amount Spotify pays every artist for each stream. Spotify Support says: “Contrary to what you might have heard, Spotify does not pay artist royalties according to a per-play or per-stream rate; the royalty payments that artists receive might vary according to differences in how their music is streamed or the agreements they have with labels or distributors.” See Spotify’s Understanding Spotify royalties explanation.
That is why dividing the $10 billion headline by a stream count would not produce a reliable artist rate. The aggregate figure covers royalties paid into a rights-holder system, while an individual’s share depends on the relevant rights and contracts.

What Spotify reports about independent artists and publishing
Independent artists and labels
Spotify for Artists says independent artists and labels collectively generated more than $5 billion from the service in 2024. This is a Spotify-reported category total, not a claim that each independent artist or label received a large payment. The same Royalties Guide reports the artist threshold figure above.
Publishing rightsholders
Spotify’s Loud & Clear payouts resource reports nearly $4.5 billion paid to publishing rightsholders over the last two years. That is a two-year figure, not an amount identified as 2024-only, so it should not be added to or substituted for the 2024 headline total.

What the headline does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you: Spotify says its music royalty payments exceeded $10 billion in 2024.
- It does not tell you: how much a particular artist or songwriter received personally.
- It does not establish: a universal per-stream rate or a complete audited allocation of the total among artists, labels, publishers, distributors, and other rightsholders.
- It does not make the separate publishing figure a 2024 total: the nearly $4.5 billion figure covers two years.
