Spotify announced a separate U.S. increase on January 15, 2026. So “but not in the U.S.” was accurate for the 2025 round, not as a description of current U.S. prices.
What Spotify announced in August 2025
On August 4, Spotify said it would update Premium prices in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific. The company said affected subscribers would receive an email over the following month, with the new price taking effect on a future billing cycle. New subscribers were directed to their local Premium page for current pricing. Spotify’s announcement named regions, not every affected country; it does not establish that every market in those regions, or every country where Spotify operates, received an increase.

The clearest published example was Premium Individual rising from €10.99 to €11.99 per month in an unspecified market, a €1 increase of about 9.1%. That example is not a universal rate: Spotify did not publish a complete country-by-country or plan-by-plan price schedule in the announcement. Contemporaneous coverage reported the same example.
Which plans and subscribers were affected?
The official announcement confirmed price changes to Premium in the named regions and illustrated one Individual-plan change. It did not establish that every plan rose by the same amount—or that Duo, Family, Student, annual billing, and local bundles changed in every market. Prices and plan structures are market-specific.

If you are trying to determine what applies to your account, use the price-change email and the plans available in your local market. Spotify’s price-update guidance points subscribers to their notification and account details. The amount or timing can also depend on taxes, currency, promotions, grandfathered terms, and whether billing is handled by Spotify, an app store, a carrier, or another partner.
Why was the U.S. not included in that round?
Spotify did not give a specific U.S.-focused explanation in its August announcement. Its public rationale was broad: occasional price updates reflect the value of Premium, help Spotify continue innovating, and benefit artists. That statement does not establish how any additional revenue is allocated.

One relevant piece of context is that U.S. subscribers had already seen price changes before August 2025: Spotify announced increases across multiple markets in 2023, and U.S. Individual pricing later moved from $10.99 to $11.99 per month. That history may help explain why the August round was staggered, but Spotify did not say it was the reason the U.S. was left out. The company’s filings describe localized pricing as adapted to market factors such as purchasing power, cost levels, and willingness to pay; that is general pricing context, not an explanation for this particular decision. Spotify’s 2023 announcement and its 2025 annual filing provide that context.
The U.S. received a separate increase in January 2026
On January 15, 2026, Spotify announced price increases for the United States, Estonia, and Latvia. In the U.S., the new prices applied during subscribers’ next billing cycle. Spotify’s current U.S. Premium page lists these monthly prices:

These are the prices shown on Spotify’s U.S. page, not a guarantee of the final charge for every account: taxes, eligibility, promotions, and third-party billing can affect what a subscriber pays. How to check what you will pay
- Check your email from Spotify. For a price change, the account-specific notification is more useful than a general regional headline.
- Check your billing route. If you pay through Apple, Google, a carrier, or another partner, the displayed price and subscription controls may differ from Spotify’s website.
- Review your account and local plan options. Confirm the plan, currency, billing date, eligibility, and any promotion or bundle associated with your subscription.
Do not assume that a price listed in another country applies to your account. Cross-border signups or VPN-based workarounds can run into payment verification, country-change, plan-eligibility, or household-residency rules; they are not a reliable way to secure another market’s price.

What the headline gets right—and what it leaves out
“Across most of the world” is an imprecise shorthand. Spotify did identify a broad set of regions in August 2025, but its announcement did not enumerate countries, so the phrase should not be read as proof that most countries or every market were affected. Likewise, the €1 increase and roughly 9.1% calculation apply only to the cited Individual-plan example, not to all countries or plans.
The useful distinction is between two announcements: the U.S. was absent from Spotify’s August 2025 regional round, then received its own increase in January 2026. That is a staggered sequence of market-specific changes, not a lasting U.S. exemption.

Deciding whether Premium still fits
A higher subscription price matters differently depending on what you use. Consider whether Premium’s ad-free and offline listening, on-demand playback, recommendations, playlists, device support, and—where available and useful—audiobook allowance justify the cost for you. For a household, compare the eligible plan structure with the number of people who actually need accounts. For an individual, weigh the monthly charge against how often you listen and whether another service or bundle would replace enough of what you use; alternative prices and features vary by market, so check their official local offers before switching.
