The change is not a single worldwide price update: check Spotify’s email and the Premium page for your country to see whether your plan is affected and when.
Which Spotify subscribers are affected?
Spotify’s January 15, 2026 announcement named subscribers in the United States, Estonia, and Latvia. It said affected subscribers would receive details by email over the following month. The announcement did not provide one global price table or specify every affected plan in each market. Spotify’s announcement directs subscribers to their country-specific Premium page for local plan information.

If you live elsewhere, or need to know the exact price and start date for your plan, use the email Spotify sent and check your account. Spotify says the new amount takes effect according to the subscriber’s billing date, so the effective date can differ from person to person. Spotify Support’s price-update guidance explains the timing.
What is the new U.S. price?
For Premium Individual in the United States, TechCrunch reported that the monthly price changed from $11.99 to $12.99, effective with the subscriber’s next monthly billing cycle. That is a U.S. Individual-plan figure; it should not be applied to Duo, Family, Student, or plans in other countries. TechCrunch’s January 15 report provides the dollar amounts and timing.

TechCrunch described this as the third U.S. Premium price increase in three years, following increases in 2023 and 2024. Spotify’s SEC-filed annual report also records U.S. price increases in those years. Spotify’s 2025 annual report is historical context, not a guide to current prices in other countries.
Why does Spotify say prices are changing?
Spotify says periodic price updates reflect the value it delivers and help it continue improving the service and benefiting artists. In its January 15 announcement, the company said: “Occasional updates to pricing across our markets reflect the value that Spotify delivers, enabling us to continue offering the best possible experience and benefit artists.” This is Spotify’s stated rationale; the announcement does not establish a specific cost, royalty, or other financial cause for this increase.

What can you do before the new price takes effect?
Spotify Support says subscribers receive an email and have a one-month grace period to cancel before the new price takes effect. The exact billing date depends on the subscription, so use the date and instructions in your account notice. Your options include:
- Check other paid plans: Spotify says you can see whether you are eligible for another Premium plan.
- Use Spotify Free: The ad-supported free service is an option if you do not want to continue paying for Premium.
- Cancel: Cancel before your next billing date if you do not want the updated charge. Follow the account or plan-management link in Spotify’s notice.
- Consider a gift card: Spotify says a lower-priced gift card can still be redeemed, but only for Premium Individual. It does not lock in a lower recurring subscription price; check the card’s market eligibility and retailer terms before buying.

How do other markets compare?
Prices are market-specific. For example, Spotify’s UK Premium page listed the following monthly amounts when accessed on October 8, 2026; these are UK prices, not U.S. equivalents.

What does the increase mean for Spotify’s value?
Spotify announced lossless audio for Premium in September 2025, with support for up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Spotify reported that the rollout to more than 50 markets was complete by October 6, 2025. That may matter when deciding whether Premium’s features justify its price for you, but Spotify has not said the lossless feature caused the 2026 increase. Spotify’s lossless announcement describes the feature and rollout.
Industry figures offer context, not a direct explanation for Spotify’s decision. Spotify’s annual report cites IFPI data indicating that global recorded-music streaming generated more than $22 billion and represented 69.6% of recorded-music revenue in 2025. It also cites IFPI’s estimate that global music-streaming subscribers grew about 11.3%, from 752 million in 2024 to 837 million in 2025. Those are worldwide industry figures, not Spotify subscriber totals or evidence of why Spotify changed a particular plan’s price.
