Free may be enough if you can live with ads and its updated controls cover your everyday listening. Whether Premium is worth paying for depends on which of those differences matter to you—and the price of a plan in your country.
What changed on Spotify Free?
On September 15, 2025, Spotify announced three ways for Free listeners to start specific tracks: Pick & Play, Search & Play, and Share & Play. In Spotify’s words, “You now have more control over how you listen: Search and play any track or jump right into something your friend just shared.” The statement describes the company’s announcement, not a guarantee that every account has identical controls.

Spotify also highlighted playlists and discovery features, customizable playlist covers, daylist, and lyrics in the mobile Now Playing view when available. The company said playlist-cover customization was available in 128 of its markets at the time of the announcement. Its announcement described the rollout as global but did not provide a market-by-market schedule or establish identical availability across every account and platform. Check the current app and Spotify support information for your market if a feature is missing.
The upgrade did not make every Spotify feature free. In the same announcement, Spotify identified Messages and daylist as features available across Free and Premium, while naming Lossless, AI Playlist, and Mix as Premium-only examples. Can you pick any song on Spotify Free?
Spotify’s announced Pick & Play, Search & Play, and Share & Play controls let Free users choose a track, search for one and start it, or open a track someone shared. That is a meaningful change for listeners who previously found the free experience less direct. It does not establish that Free offers all the playback flexibility Spotify advertises for Premium: Premium includes playback in any order and unlimited skips.
In practical terms, Free is a stronger option if you mostly listen to playlists and discovery mixes but sometimes want to start a particular song. If you often need to dictate what plays next, the Premium playback controls remain a separate advantage.

What does Premium still add?
Spotify’s U.S. Premium page advertises four differences that are especially relevant to deciding whether to pay:
- No music ads: Premium removes music ads, which matters if interruptions regularly disrupt listening.
- Offline downloads: Premium lets subscribers download music for listening without a connection, useful for travel or unreliable service.
- Lossless audio: Spotify advertises lossless listening up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz on its U.S. page. Whether that difference matters to you depends on your listening habits and equipment.
- Playback in any order and unlimited skips: Premium offers more complete control when you want to manage a listening session rather than accept the limits of a free tier.
These are features Spotify currently advertises for U.S. Premium, not a promise that every plan or market has identical terms. Check the U.S. Premium page or the local plan page for the offer available to you. Spotify’s lossless listening support page provides more detail on that feature.

How much does Spotify Premium cost?
Prices depend on country, plan, and eligibility, so do not treat a U.S. price as a worldwide rate. When the U.S. Premium page was accessed for this comparison, it listed Individual at $12.99 per month after a displayed $0 one-month offer for eligible new subscribers; Student at $6.99 per month after a displayed one-month offer; Duo at $18.99 per month; and Family at $21.99 per month. Offers, eligibility, and prices can change. Student eligibility and household requirements for Duo and Family are plan-specific.
Spotify’s January 15, 2026 notice said subscribers in the U.S., Estonia, and Latvia would receive emails explaining a price update; the notice directed new subscribers to local pricing rather than supplying an updated price table. For the amount currently offered, check Spotify’s U.S. plan page if you are in the United States, or Spotify’s local Premium page for another market. Is Spotify Premium worth it for you?
Decide based on what repeatedly gets in the way of listening, rather than on the upgrade headline alone:
- Stay with Free if ads do not bother you much, you use playlists and discovery, and the new ways to start tracks meet your needs.
- Consider Premium if music ads are a recurring annoyance, you often listen offline, want lossless playback, or regularly need playback in any order with unlimited skips.
- Check the local cost per person if you may qualify for Student or share an eligible Duo or Family plan. The actual value depends on local pricing and the plan’s terms.
The September 2025 changes make Free more capable; they do not settle whether Premium is worth its cost for everyone. Spotify’s announcement describes features, not independent evidence that listeners generally no longer need a paid plan. The decision is personal: weigh the benefits you would use often against the current price where you live.

Is the 2026 managed-accounts change the same upgrade?
No. Spotify’s 2026 expansion of managed accounts to Free is a separate family and parental-controls development, not part of the September 2025 playback-control changes. Spotify describes that expansion separately in its managed-accounts announcement.
