He read claims about sugilite and sleep, bought a large piece, and believed it helped her rest. That is Pratt’s personal interpretation—not evidence that crystals treated her pain. From there, collecting became a spiritual practice, a memorable part of his The Hills persona, and a retail business.
How Spencer Pratt says his crystal interest began
In an interview with Horoscope.com, Pratt said he started researching crystals after Montag experienced pain following surgery. He came across claims about sugilite and sleep or nightmares, bought a large piece, and said Montag held it while sleeping. Pratt took her reported rest as meaningful, while acknowledging he could not rule out the placebo effect: “I don’t know if it was the placebo effect, but it helped the person I loved most so I was all in.”
This explains why the subject became important to him: he connected a loved one’s difficult period with an object he believed might help. It does not establish that sugilite relieved her pain, changed her sleep medically, or has a healing effect. The account is what Pratt said happened and how he understood it.
From one stone to an extensive spiritual practice
Pratt has described collecting and carrying crystals, learning the properties people attribute to different stones, wearing them, and taking a crystal wand with him. In a Hypebae interview, he also discussed practices such as crystal grids and moon rituals, as well as portals and astral travel. These are descriptions of his interests, not evidence that the practices produce supernatural effects.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
He has also given crystals a more personal meaning: they can be beautiful objects or reminders that help someone focus on an intention. Speaking about aquamarine to Hypebae, Pratt said, “Whether or not the aquamarine stone is giving me courage power, my own being is like, it’s a tool that inspires my own mind to think that way.” That framing leaves room for the object to matter to him without claiming the stone itself has a proven power.
Why the The Hills crystal scene became so memorable
Pratt’s crystal use became a distinctive image for viewers of The Hills, including the scene in which he held a crystal to his forehead. In a later Pedestrian.TV interview, he said the moment was funny to audiences but spiritually significant to him. He described it as something “so meant to be,” adding that there was “something so much more to it, with spirituality.” The contrast is central to the image’s staying power: viewers could treat it as spectacle or a meme, while Pratt said it expressed a real belief.

How collecting became a business
Pratt’s collecting also led to Pratt Daddy Crystals. A Katie Couric Media profile published April 5, 2021, described the business as selling crystal jewelry and home decor, including pendants and bracelets. The profile reported that Pratt and Montag then had a collection of more than 1,000 crystals; that was an estimate attributed to Pratt at the time, not a current inventory count. The profile also reproduced a disclaimer saying the products were not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease, or replace medical treatment. Those details describe the business as covered in 2021; they do not confirm its current catalog or status.
There are eye-catching numbers attached to Pratt’s collection, but they need attribution. GQ’s June 2026 retrospective reported that Pratt had said he spent $500,000 on crystals in 2010; the owner of the Santa Monica shop where Pratt said he shopped questioned that amount. It is a disputed, self-reported figure, not an audited total. Accounts summarized by GQ and Katie Couric Media also attribute to Pratt a claim that a large crystal weighed 3,000 pounds; that figure was not independently verified in those reports.

What happened to his collection
GQ’s June 2026 retrospective reports that most of Pratt’s collection was lost when his Pacific Palisades home burned in the 2025 fire. The loss is a major chapter in the story of his collecting, although the available reporting does not provide a verified current count of what survived.

Personal accounts can explain why someone values a crystal, but they cannot show that it treats a medical condition. The UK Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) says the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and CAP have not seen evidence that crystal therapy can treat medical conditions. Its guidance on crystal therapy advertising says health-treatment claims would require robust clinical trial evidence and warns that unsupported claims can discourage people from seeking essential medical care. This is UK advertising guidance, not a clinical trial or a universal legal ruling.

It is accurate to say that Pratt believes sugilite helped Montag sleep during a painful period. It would go beyond his account and the evidence to state that the stone cured pain or that crystal therapy is an established treatment for pain, nightmares, anxiety, or disease.
