In the 2024 animated film Spellbound, a spell turns Princess Ellian’s parents into monsters. Director Vicky Jenson says the fairy-tale transformation gives the filmmakers a way to explore a recognizable family rupture: the distance that can grow between parents and children, and the effort to understand one another. The ending’s key boundary is just as important: Ellian is not responsible for repairing her parents’ relationship.
How the fairy tale expresses a family story
Netflix’s synopsis sets up the crisis: Ellian, the daughter of Lumbria’s king and queen, must face the consequences after a spell transforms her parents into monsters. Jenson has described the familiar fairy-tale ingredients as a way to tell a more ordinary, emotionally difficult story. “If we start with the familiar — the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell — we could use that to express the story of this family,” she told Netflix Tudum.
That framing shifts the transformation away from a simple monster-versus-hero conflict. The monsters are Ellian’s parents; the central problem is what has happened within the family. The magic makes that rupture visible, while the story follows the possibility of moving from alienation toward greater understanding.
What Jenson says the film is about
Jenson has described the theme as broader than the particular royal family. “For me, the story is even more universal than the specifics of this family dynamic. For me, it speaks to kids and their parents, to the kind of alienation that can happen as we grow up and the steps we have to make toward each other to weather it together and come through the other side with better understanding,” she told Netflix Tudum.

The film also considers how anger and animosity can cause parents to lose sight of their child, Jenson said in a PBS discussion. That is part of why the story does not simply cast the parents as villains: it looks at the damage conflict can do without reducing the family to a battle between good and bad people.
Why Ellian is not made responsible for fixing things
The ending’s central choice is that Ellian cannot be tasked with repairing her parents’ relationship. In an interview with Sophia Soto for The Nerds of Color, Jenson said the film needed a happy ending while still feeling authentic to a family in difficulty. The parents created the problem, so they must address it: “It’s the parents that have to do the work.”
Rank #2
That distinction lets the story offer hope without making a child responsible for adult choices. Ellian can care about her family and take part in what happens, but the repair of her parents’ relationship belongs to the parents. The magical resolution is a fairy-tale ending, not a claim that real family conflicts resolve just as neatly.

Jenson has said the film can open a conversation about hard feelings and family change. That is a reasonable way to approach it as a viewer: the story can give families a shared fictional situation to talk about, including anger, distance, and the difference between a child’s role and a parent’s responsibilities.

The interviews establish the filmmakers’ intentions; they do not establish that watching Spellbound has a therapeutic effect or that it is clinical guidance. Families may read the ending differently, and a film’s resolution does not determine how any real family’s circumstances should be handled.
