What happens to Agnes at the end of the 2024 remake?
Ant leads Agnes to a hidden chamber and shows her a photo album of families Paddy and Ciara befriended. It includes a picture of Ant with his biological family and with an intact tongue, revealing what happened to him. Agnes tells Ben and Louise what she has learned.
The Daltons try to leave, but Paddy and Ciara stop them and the confrontation turns violent. As Ben and Louise fight back, Agnes gets free and injects Paddy with the sedative he meant to use on her. Once Paddy is incapacitated, Ant kills him. Agnes then escapes with Ben, Louise, and Ant; the film ends as they drive away.
How does Agnes help the family escape?
Agnes is not simply rescued. She listens to Ant, brings the danger to her parents’ attention, and uses the sedative at the decisive moment. Her actions show initiative and trust in Ant under pressure. The ending does not establish that she is healed or free of trauma.

How does the 2024 ending differ from the 2022 original?

Writer-director James Watkins explained the remake’s shift in an interview with SYFY Wire: “The film is all about not doing things when there’s a veneer of politeness. But when things reach a point of overt violence, I don’t think those rules apply. I think you’re now in the Wild West. You’re now in caveman territory. I wanted to explore what happens when civilization breaks down. Let’s confront people who are used to civilization with violence and see how they respond. It’s a totally different dynamic.” The contrasting endings are also discussed by TIME.
What the film leaves unresolved
The movie does not show the family’s arrival, what they tell authorities, Agnes’s medical or emotional recovery, or whether Ben and Louise repair their marriage. Any specific account of those events goes beyond what appears onscreen.
