Speak No Evil (2024) is a psychological horror thriller about an ordinary family who accept a weekend invitation from people they meet on holiday—and discover that politeness can become a trap. Written and directed by James Watkins, the film is an English-language remake and reimagining of the 2022 Danish film Gæsterne, not a sequel.

Spoiler warning: The sections below discuss the film’s plot and ending.

What is Speak No Evil (2024) about?

Ben and Louise Dalton, an American couple, are travelling with their daughter Agnes when they meet Paddy, Ciara and their son Ant. The two families appear to connect easily, and Paddy later invites the Daltons to spend a weekend at his family’s isolated country home.

What begins as an uncomfortable but potentially harmless social visit gradually turns coercive. Paddy pushes past boundaries, Ciara reinforces his behavior, and the Daltons find themselves repeatedly making excuses for conduct that should alarm them. Their hosts’ demands become more invasive, while the family’s desire to avoid confrontation leaves them increasingly exposed.

The film’s central horror does not depend only on physical violence. It comes from the social pressure to be agreeable: accepting another drink, overlooking a cruel remark, tolerating an unsettling request or worrying that leaving would seem rude. Paddy exploits those ordinary instincts until hospitality becomes a form of control.

Cast and characters

Actor Character
James McAvoy Paddy
Mackenzie Davis Louise Dalton
Scoot McNairy Ben Dalton
Aisling Franciosi Ciara
Alix West Lefler Agnes Dalton
Dan Hough Ant

James McAvoy gives Paddy the film’s most immediately memorable performance. Paddy can be warm, funny and disarming in one moment, then threatening or humiliating in the next. That instability makes it difficult for the Daltons to decide whether they are witnessing bad manners, cultural difference or genuine danger.

Mackenzie Davis plays Louise as the family member most alert to the situation’s risks. Scoot McNairy’s Ben is more inclined to preserve the appearance of harmony, creating a conflict within the marriage as the weekend worsens.

Why the weekend becomes frightening

Speak No Evil builds tension through incremental boundary violations instead of revealing everything at once. The Daltons are not immediately locked in a cellar or attacked by masked figures. They are placed in situations where objecting feels socially costly, and every attempt to maintain normality gives Paddy more control.

  1. Charm establishes trust. The hosts first present themselves as friendly and generous.
  2. Awkward behavior is normalized. The guests question whether they are overreacting.
  3. Boundaries are tested. Paddy turns small acts of discomfort into expectations of obedience.
  4. Leaving becomes harder. The isolated setting and escalating threats make retreat dangerous.
  5. The family must choose confrontation. Courtesy is no longer a protection; it has become part of the danger.

This structure is also what connects the film to its title. “Speak no evil” describes the Daltons’ reluctance to say plainly that something is wrong. The phrase becomes less a moral instruction than a warning about the consequences of silence.

Is it a remake of the 2022 Danish film?

Yes. The 2024 film is based on the screenplay by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup, who made the Danish Speak No Evil—originally titled Gæsterne—in 2022. The newer film keeps the basic premise of two families meeting and spending an increasingly dangerous weekend together, but it is not a sequel.

Watkins changes the characters’ nationalities and several relationship dynamics. The visitors are an American family, while Paddy and Ciara are British. The remake also takes a different approach to the final act. It retains the original’s themes of politeness, passivity and social complicity while giving the conflict a more active and conventionally suspenseful resolution.

Speak No Evil (2024) ending explained

In the final confrontation, the Daltons stop trying to manage Paddy and Ciara’s behavior through politeness and fight back. Ben and Louise survive, while Paddy and Ciara are killed. Ant escapes with the Daltons, giving the ending a degree of hope that is absent from the 2022 Danish film.

That difference is significant. The original film is known for its much bleaker, more nihilistic conclusion, in which the victims’ passivity leads to catastrophic consequences. Watkins’s version does not erase the damage caused by the Daltons’ hesitation, but it allows them to reclaim agency. The remake therefore shifts from an ending about total helplessness to one about recognizing danger and acting before it is too late.

Production and filming locations

James Watkins wrote and directed the 2024 version. The film was produced by Blumhouse and distributed in the United States by Universal Pictures.

Although the story presents the hosts’ home as being in the British countryside, substantial portions of the production were filmed in Croatia. Locations in Istria included Grožnjan, Motovun and the surrounding Kaldir area. Filming in Croatia took place in May 2023 and lasted four days, according to the Croatian Audiovisual Centre.

Is Speak No Evil worth watching?

The film is a strong choice for viewers who prefer horror built around social discomfort, manipulation and escalating psychological pressure rather than supernatural mythology. McAvoy’s performance gives the story an unpredictable antagonist, while the remake’s more active final act makes it more accessible than the Danish original for viewers who want a thriller with a clearer sense of confrontation.

Those looking for the original’s uncompromising bleakness may find the 2024 conclusion less disturbing. The two films work best as separate interpretations of the same premise: the Danish film emphasizes nihilistic passivity, while Watkins’s version focuses more heavily on fear, family conflict and resistance.
