Spoilers for Speak No Evil (2024) and the 2022 Danish original. In the 2024 film, Ben, Louise, and Agnes uncover that Paddy and Ciara have been killing vacation acquaintances and abducting their children. Ant, whom the couple claimed was their son, is a child from an earlier victim family; Paddy and Ciara cut out his tongue to stop him revealing the truth. The family fights back: Agnes uses Paddy’s sedative to incapacitate him, and Ant kills him with a brick before the group escapes. The film ends with them driving away, without showing Ant’s future or resolving Ben and Louise’s marriage.
Who is Ant?
Ant is not Paddy and Ciara’s biological son. He is a child they abducted after murdering his parents. The couple mutilated him by cutting out his tongue, leaving him unable to expose their crimes or explain what had happened to him. They then made him perform the role of their child around their guests.
That reveal changes the meaning of Ant’s earlier behavior: his silence and distress were not simply signs of a difficult child. He was living under the control of the people who had killed his family.
Why does Ant kill Paddy?
After Agnes uses a sedative taken from Paddy to incapacitate him, Ben has the opportunity to kill Paddy but refuses. Ant delivers the fatal blow with a brick. He is killing the man who murdered his parents, abducted him, mutilated him, and forced him into a false family role. His act also gives Ben, Louise, and Agnes a chance to escape.

Ben’s refusal is deliberately open to interpretation. Scoot McNairy, who plays Ben, reads it as a kind of victory: Ben does not let Paddy turn him into a killer. The scene can also be read as evidence of Ben’s hesitation, or both. The film does not settle the question for the audience.
Ant’s act is not an uncomplicated triumph. He has been forced into a violent reckoning with the person who destroyed his family. The ending does not tell us what becomes of him or establish that he will grow up to be violent.

Does the family survive?
Ben, Louise, and Agnes escape and are shown driving away. The film ends before we see what happens to Ant after the escape, and it does not say whether Ben and Louise repair their marriage. Their immediate survival is clear; the longer aftermath is not.
Why does the remake change the original ending?
The 2022 Danish original ends in catastrophe: the killers murder their adult guests and take the daughter to use as a replacement child and a lure for future victims. In James Watkins’s 2024 remake, the visiting family resists, Ant turns on Paddy, and the group escapes.

| Film | What happens at the end | Effect on the audience |
|---|---|---|
| Speak No Evil (2022), Danish original | The killers succeed against their adult guests and take the daughter. | A bleak outcome that punishes the family’s failure to act. |
| Speak No Evil (2024), remake | The family fights back and escapes; Ant kills Paddy. | A more cathartic survival climax, though Ant’s fate remains unknown. |
Watkins explained the change in terms of the characters and the adaptation’s dramatic approach, not as a general rule about Americans or Danes. He said that when the danger to the characters and their child becomes unmistakable, he believed they would try to resist. The remake keeps the story’s concern with social niceties but shifts its ending from passive catastrophe to overt violence and survival.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the ending say about politeness?
For Watkins, politeness is part of the danger: people can keep avoiding confrontation even as warning signs accumulate. His description of the film’s theme is that it is “all about not doing things when there’s a veneer of politeness.” The remake makes that idea physical in its climax: once the threat is undeniable, the family’s survival depends on acting rather than preserving social comfort.

The two endings therefore leave viewers with different experiences: the original drives its social critique toward an uncompromising defeat, while Watkins’s version allows resistance without erasing the violence that makes it possible.
