Spartacus: House of Ashur is a ten-episode what-if continuation, not a straightforward account of Roman history: it asks what happens if Ashur survives the end of Spartacus: Vengeance and takes charge of the gladiator school he once served. The premise gives the franchise a new route into its familiar mix of arena violence, sexual spectacle and Roman power games. Whether that return works for you depends in part on your appetite for heightened melodrama; critics have generally responded more warmly than audiences, while the series’ graphic content is central to its appeal.
What is Spartacus: House of Ashur about?
The series builds on a counterfactual: Ashur, played by Nick Tarabay, does not die on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance. Instead, after helping Rome defeat Spartacus and the slave rebellion, he is rewarded with the gladiator school once owned by Batiatus. He goes from serving the ludus to owning it, and tries to consolidate his power in a world where Roman status is never secure.
Achillia, played by Tenika Davis, is central to Ashur’s new operation. The official listings frame the pair’s staged spectacles as challenges to Rome’s elite, giving the series a public arena for its combat and a political one for its rivalries. Graham McTavish plays Korris; Claudia Black is also listed as Cossutia.
Is it a sequel to Spartacus: Vengeance?
Yes, but specifically an alternate-history sequel. It continues the franchise from a changed outcome rather than picking up the established timeline unchanged. The “what if Ashur lived?” premise is the bridge: it keeps the character and the world, then asks how the story shifts when Ashur holds the power he once served.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters if you are looking for historical drama. This is a fictional divergence within a TV franchise, not a claim about what happened in ancient Rome. Its continuity is chiefly a way to explore familiar franchise themes—status, spectacle, betrayal and survival—from Ashur’s new position.
What kind of Spartacus experience is it?
The show’s appeal is built around a combination of elements rather than a single selling point:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- A character-driven power climb: Ashur’s change from subordinate to dominus creates the season’s central dramatic question: can he turn a sudden reward into lasting authority?
- Arena spectacle: The setup puts gladiatorial combat and staged displays at the heart of the story. The Los Angeles Times’ Robert Lloyd noted the show’s complicated fight scenes alongside its sets, costumes and effects.
- Roman politics: Ashur’s position brings him into the orbit of the elite, where spectacle is also a tool for influence. Alan Sepinwall’s assessment highlights the series’ political machinations as part of its bloody, sensual mix.
- Unsubtle, heightened melodrama: The tone is emphatic rather than restrained. Decider’s Joel Keller found the acting unsubtle, a useful signal for viewers who prefer naturalistic performances.
The critical response suggests that the franchise’s lurid style can be a hook rather than the whole point. The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han saw the show’s NSFW appeal as something that can give way to investment in its characters. That is an attributed critical view, not a guarantee that every viewer will make the same shift.
How graphic is the series?
Violence and sexual content are not incidental to the show’s identity. Apple TV lists House of Ashur as 17+ and flags language, sexual content and violence. The Prime Video listing accessed for this review uses an 18+ label; age ratings vary by storefront and region, so check the rating shown where you plan to watch. Common Sense Media critic Melissa Camacho describes the series as gruesome fantasy violence and sexual hedonism.

If you want a restrained historical drama, this is likely a poor match. If you are seeking the franchise’s combination of violent arena action, sensuality and extravagant Roman melodrama, those qualities are precisely what the show foregrounds.
What did critics and viewers think?
At the time Rotten Tomatoes was accessed in October 2026, House of Ashur had a 91% Tomatometer from 11 critic reviews and a 64% Popcornmeter from more than 500 audience ratings. The gap points to a more favorable critical response than audience response in that snapshot; neither score is a fixed measure of quality, and both can change as ratings are added.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises the series as a surprising return to the Spartacus canon, with drama and intrigue among its strengths. Individual reviews underline the trade-offs: critics have noted the fight staging, production design, action and political plotting, while others may be less receptive to its overt style. The scores and reviews offer context, not a substitute for deciding whether that tone suits you.

Where can you watch Spartacus: House of Ashur?
Rotten Tomatoes identifies STARZ as the series’ network, and Apple TV and Prime Video also list it in their storefronts. Availability varies by territory and service, so check your local listings for current access. A listing on a platform does not by itself guarantee availability in every region.
Is Spartacus: House of Ashur worth watching?
It is a reasonable pick for viewers who want the Spartacus franchise’s bloody action and sensual spectacle, and who are curious to see Ashur’s survival turn into a new political and personal rise. Its alternate-history premise gives the series a clear reason to revisit the ludus, while its heightened tone is also the main point of hesitation for anyone who prefers understated drama. The critic-audience score split makes that divide visible, but the best guide is whether you want a lurid, melodramatic arena saga rather than a restrained historical series.
STARZ’s official announcement frames the season as a ten-episode alternate-history continuation. The current platform listings and reception details cited here were accessed in October 2026 and may change.
