The system has no public fixed per-stream rate, so a stream count alone cannot tell you what you will earn. SoundCloud for Artists distribution is a separate revenue stream: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and other partners apply their own royalty systems.
What are fan-powered royalties?
SoundCloud says fan-powered royalties replaced its previous pooled model on April 1, 2021. Under the old approach, revenue from dedicated fans was pooled and allocated according to each artist’s share of total platform streams. Under the current model, subscription and advertising revenue attributable to a listener is distributed among the artists that listener streamed during that month. SoundCloud’s Fan-powered Royalties FAQ describes the change and the factors in its allocation.

In practical terms, a listener’s activity can matter more than a platform-wide stream-share calculation. SoundCloud says the more a dedicated fan listens to an artist, the more that artist may receive from the revenue associated with that fan. This describes the model’s allocation logic; it is not a guarantee that a particular listener or play will produce a specific amount.
How does SoundCloud calculate fan-powered royalties?
SoundCloud names four factors that affect the allocation:
#1 Best Overall
- Audio Brand Apparel design. CT Sounds Logo T-Shirt
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- Listening time: how much of a fan’s total monthly SoundCloud listening time goes to an artist.
- Ads viewed: the advertising activity associated with the fan.
- Subscription type: whether the fan has Go+, Go or DJ.
- SoundCloud’s revenue share: its share of subscription and advertising revenue.
SoundCloud does not publish a complete public calculation formula or a fixed rate per stream in its FAQ. There is therefore no reliable way to calculate an artist’s payout from a stream total alone. For account-specific earnings, use the statements in SoundCloud for Artists.
How can artists qualify and set up monetization?
SoundCloud directs artists to SoundCloud for Artists for direct monetization of SoundCloud listening. Its FAQ names Artist and Artist Pro subscriptions as routes to dashboard access and says there are no specific eligibility requirements for monetizing and distributing with SoundCloud for Artists. That broad statement does not override content rules, rights checks or approval decisions. SoundCloud’s SoundCloud for Artists terms and monetization eligibility guidance govern what can be monetized.
Prepare rights information for review
Artists must be able to demonstrate ownership or permission for the material they submit. Tracks with third-party beats, stems or samples may require license documentation; sample-based tracks may need permission for both the composition and the master recording. Some non-exclusive material may also be unavailable for delivery to certain destinations. SoundCloud says a review of submitted rights documentation can take up to 3–5 business days. Keep licenses, beat and collaboration agreements, and accurate contributor details available. See SoundCloud’s rights-clearance guidance.

Does SoundCloud for Artists distribution use the same payout model?
No. SoundCloud’s fan-powered allocation applies to revenue from listeners’ SoundCloud activity. When SoundCloud for Artists distributes a release to Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music or another external service, that service’s royalty system determines the earnings. SoundCloud says it pays artists 100% of the distribution royalties it receives, subject to any payout-processing fee; that share does not mean external platforms use SoundCloud’s fan-powered formula.
| Revenue stream | Where the listening happens | How earnings are determined | Reporting and payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct SoundCloud monetization | SoundCloud | Fan-powered allocation of subscription and ad revenue using the listener and account factors SoundCloud names; no public fixed per-stream rate. | SoundCloud for Artists balances update monthly; current payout guidance describes a $25 USD threshold and roughly two-month reporting delay. |
| SoundCloud for Artists distribution | External partner services such as Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music | Each external service’s own royalty system; SoundCloud says artists receive 100% of royalties it receives from distribution partners. | SoundCloud for Artists balances update monthly; current payout guidance describes a $25 USD threshold and roughly two-month reporting delay. |
The reporting and payout details in the table are SoundCloud for Artists guidance, not a promise that every service reports on the same schedule. SoundCloud says platforms generally take 30–45 days to report and pay royalties, followed by processing time. See Getting Paid.
What does SoundCloud pay, and what fees apply?
SoundCloud’s payout-fees guidance says that, as of November 2025, its royalty revenue share changed from 80% to 100% for earnings from SoundCloud streams and royalties generated on other platforms. This is SoundCloud’s stated revenue share; it does not make payouts fee-free. Its help page lists estimated third-party processing fees from $0.50 to $25 USD, depending on method and location.

When balances update and payments arrive
SoundCloud says SoundCloud for Artists balances update monthly and payments are deposited automatically once earnings reach $25 USD. Before a payment can be made, complete payout and tax information, accept the SoundCloud for Artists terms, and enable two-factor authentication. Its current guidance estimates that royalties typically appear with about a two-month delay because platforms take time to report and pay. Thresholds, timing and processor fees can change, so check the account’s current payment details.

SoundCloud says the pooled model could be exploited through vanity accounts and bots, while fan-powered royalties connect allocation to real listeners’ subscription revenue and ads and distribute it only among artists those listeners played. That is SoundCloud’s explanation of the model’s incentives, not evidence that fraud has been eliminated. Its October 2025 terms prohibit artificial streaming and state that SoundCloud may reset stream counts associated with automated, artificial or fraudulent activity.
Is SoundCloud Premier still open?
No. Premier is a legacy program and SoundCloud says it is not accepting new applications. Existing Premier members may remain unless they opt out. Older Premier help pages describe different payment arrangements, including a $5 threshold and PayPal; those details should not be applied to SoundCloud for Artists generally. The current SoundCloud for Artists payout guidance describes a $25 USD threshold and additional payout methods. See SoundCloud’s Premier FAQ.
