Sound of Freedom is a dramatized 2023 thriller inspired by anti-trafficking activist Tim Ballard and operations associated with Operation Underground Railroad—not a documentary or a reliable picture of how most trafficking cases unfold. Since its release, the film has drawn debate over its accuracy, QAnon-related promotion, a false rumor about AMC theaters, and allegations involving Ballard. Here is what is established, and what the latest reported legal development does—and does not—mean.
What is Sound of Freedom about?
Directed and co-written by Alejandro Monteverde with Rod Barr, the PG-13 film follows a federal agent who rescues a boy, learns the boy’s sister is still captive, and travels to Colombia to try to save her. Jim Caviezel stars, alongside Mira Sorvino, Bill Camp, José Zúñiga, and Eduardo Verástegui. Angel Studios lists the 2023 film at 2 hours 11 minutes. The U.S. theatrical release began July 4, 2023. Angel Studios’ film page and its release announcement describe the film and launch.

How much did it make?
Angel Studios reported approximately $185 million in domestic theatrical gross and approximately $250 million worldwide in its SEC-filed annual report for fiscal 2024. Those figures are the company’s reported theatrical grosses—not profit, investor returns, a ticket count, or later streaming revenue. The Associated Press also reported that Angel leaders credited the “pay it forward” ticket program with bringing nearly 2 million additional viewers; that is the company leaders’ estimate, not an independently audited audience count. Angel Studios’ SEC filing; Associated Press coverage.
Is Sound of Freedom based on a true story?
It draws on Ballard and anti-trafficking operations associated with Operation Underground Railroad, but its central rescue plot is dramatized. The Washington Post reported that Ballard had not claimed to have done precisely what the movie portrays. ABC News quoted Kristen Abrams, senior director of combating human trafficking at the McCain Institute, saying, “The second half of the movie is not true.” Abrams also criticized scenes depicting solo rescue raids and extrajudicial killings, saying those events were not true. These are expert criticisms of the film’s portrayal, not claims that human trafficking is unreal. The Washington Post’s account; ABC News’ reporting.

- Based on the true story of Tim Ballard, portrayed by Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ), a former US government agent, who quits his job in order to devote his life to rescuing children from global sex traffickers.
Why experts challenged the movie’s portrayal
The movie emphasizes stranger abduction and a dramatic undercover rescue. Abrams’ broader point, as reported by ABC, was that trafficking often involves children who know the trafficker and vulnerabilities such as involvement with the child-welfare system, homelessness, or family economic hardship. A thriller built around a rescue operation should not be mistaken for a documentary account of typical trafficking patterns.
What was the QAnon controversy?
The controversy involves the film’s promotion and reception as well as statements by its star; those should not be conflated with the movie’s plot. The Washington Post reported that the film itself does not depict the QAnon fantasy of a hidden elite cabal, though it was promoted in QAnon spaces. Jim Caviezel expressed support for some related claims. PolitiFact described his claims about adrenochrome as a baseless QAnon conspiracy. Those claims are not established facts, and their association with Caviezel does not make them the film’s narrative or evidence about trafficking. PolitiFact’s explainer; The Washington Post.

Did AMC sabotage Sound of Freedom screenings?
No. PolitiFact rated the claim that AMC intentionally disrupted screenings—through air conditioning, lighting, or other problems—false. It reported that both AMC and Angel Studios rejected the allegation and cited AMC CEO Adam Aron’s statement that more than one million people had bought tickets at AMC theaters. The sabotage story was a rumor, not an established event. PolitiFact’s fact-check.
What happened to Tim Ballard after the movie?
On November 15, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill declined to file charges against Ballard in connection with allegations raised by several women in lawsuits, citing insufficient admissible evidence. Gill said the decision did not mean his office disbelieved or diminished survivors’ accounts. A decision not to bring criminal charges is a prosecutorial charging decision; it is not a trial verdict or a judicial finding resolving the allegations. The latest legal update established here is AP’s report of that November 2025 decision; it should not be read as a statement that no later developments occurred. Associated Press, November 15, 2025.
