It can prompt questions about child trafficking; its plot should not be taken as a typical account of how trafficking happens.

Is Sound of Freedom a true story?
It draws on Ballard and his anti-trafficking work, but the rescue narrative is dramatized rather than a documentary record of events. In an August 28, 2023 ABC News report, Kristen Abrams, senior director of combating human trafficking at the McCain Institute, said: “The second half of the movie is not true.” Her point concerned the film’s fictionalized storyline, including its portrayal of a lone agent leading raids.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters: the film’s premise may be gripping, but it is not evidence that trafficking cases generally unfold through stranger abductions followed by dramatic rescue operations.
How does the film differ from typical trafficking dynamics?
Abrams told ABC News that the stranger-abduction premise and lone-agent raids shown in the film do not represent typical trafficking dynamics. She said the overwhelming majority of children know their trafficker and pointed to vulnerabilities such as involvement with the child-welfare system, homelessness, and family economic hardship. Those are observations attributed to Abrams in that report, not a standalone prevalence study.
Rank #2
The film should therefore be treated as a dramatized entry point to a difficult subject—not a guide to identifying trafficking, a representative case study, or a source for prevalence figures. The sources cited here do not establish a general statistic that can be inferred from the film’s dialogue or promotion.
What controversy surrounded the film?
Some public controversy concerned promotion and statements associated with star Jim Caviezel, not the movie’s depicted plot. The Washington Post reported that the film was promoted on QAnon message boards and that Caviezel had voiced conspiracy claims. Its account describes the film itself as depicting conventional criminals, not a QAnon cabal. ABC News also covered false adrenochrome claims and an unsubstantiated theory that AMC disrupted screenings; Angel rejected the AMC sabotage claim.

These claims should not be confused with the film’s fictionalized narrative or with well-documented trafficking crimes. The Washington Post also reported that its fact-checker found no evidence for Ballard’s version of a claim that 10,000 children are smuggled into the United States for sex each year. Avoid treating that figure as established fact.
Separately, the Washington Post describes disputes over Operation Underground Railroad (OUR), the organization associated with Ballard, and reports that experts have criticized aspects of its claims and methods. Those criticisms concern the organization and its practices; they are distinct from verified facts about the film’s production or plot.

Angel’s current page lists Angel Guild streaming, digital purchase or rental, Blu-ray, and DVD. Availability and retailer inventory can change, so check the page or your preferred service for current access. The page does not establish which option is cheapest.
How successful was the film?
In an April 10, 2024 Associated Press report, Angel Studios said the film had earned over $250 million globally. That is a studio-reported performance figure, not a current audited total. The AP also reported Angel leaders’ claim that the pay-it-forward ticket initiative reached nearly 2 million additional viewers; that figure is likewise attributed to the studio.
