The show then killed his character, Deputy Chief David Hale, in the season 3 premiere. Those are connected events, but not quite the same explanation: Sheridan described why he chose not to return, while creator Kurt Sutter explained how the production turned the failed negotiations into a story choice.
Why did Taylor Sheridan leave Sons of Anarchy?
Sheridan said the show did not pay enough for him to cover rent and living expenses, so he worked a second job while appearing on the series. In a 2026 account to The Daily Beast, he recalled leaving the set to go to that job and said he told the production he would not return for the same price after season 2.
He said he asked for a higher rate and a guarantee of episodes, but considered the offer inadequate and decided to leave. Those negotiation details come from Sheridan’s retrospective account; the available reporting does not include contract documents or a detailed response from FX business affairs.
His departure was not, by his account, because he disliked the show. In 2010, after Hale’s death aired, Sheridan told the Los Angeles Times that he loved the role and working with the cast, and would have liked to continue. He called Hale’s death “artistically a pretty incredible choice, even though I would have loved to have done the show for longer.”

How did the show explain Hale’s exit?
Sheridan played Deputy Chief David Hale, a lawman whose outlook and relationship with SAMCRO shifted over the first two seasons. In the season 3 premiere, a van strikes and kills Hale during an attack on the club.
In September 2010, Sutter told Digital Spy that Hale’s death had first been conceived as a contingency in case negotiations with Sheridan failed. The creative team came to prefer that option. Sutter put it this way: “Ultimately, we all creatively fell in love with Plan B, and that became the decision and we moved ahead.”

What did Hale’s death change in the story?
Hale’s death removed a law-enforcement figure whose loyalties and view of the Sons had become more complicated than simple opposition. It also created a dilemma for Sheriff Unser: whether his duty was to Charming or to the Sons, as Sutter explained in the contemporary coverage.
The season 3 premiere drew about 4.1 million viewers, according to the Los Angeles Times’ September 2010 report. That is a historical audience figure for the episode, not a current measure of the series’ viewership or evidence about Sheridan’s reason for leaving.

So was it a business decision or a creative one?
Both accounts matter. Sheridan’s stated reason for leaving was the compensation offer; Sutter said the production had considered killing Hale if negotiations failed, then chose that direction because the creative team liked it. The real-world departure began with a pay disagreement, and the fictional death became a story decision with consequences for the show’s characters.
