That opening-weekend result does not mean Sonic won every later weekend or finished with the larger worldwide total.
Which film had the bigger opening weekend?
Both films opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters on December 20, 2024. The Associated Press, citing studio estimates in its December 22 report, put Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at $62 million for the opening weekend and Mufasa: The Lion King at $35 million. The AP’s opening-weekend report therefore showed Sonic comfortably in front.
A later Box Office Mojo listing records Sonic’s domestic opening at $60,102,146, while ScreenDollars’ January 12, 2025 comparison lists the opening figures as $60.1 million for Sonic and $35.4 million for Mufasa. These figures differ because they come from sources and reporting snapshots using different conventions; the AP’s $62 million and $35 million figures were studio estimates, not the same kind of listing as the later figures.
Why the holiday weekend changed the picture
When Christmas falls in the middle of the week, box-office coverage may compare the standard Friday-to-Sunday weekend with a longer holiday frame. In its December 29 report, the AP said Sonic earned $38 million over the three-day weekend and Mufasa earned $37.1 million. Across the five-day count, however, Mufasa led with $63.8 million. The AP’s holiday-weekend report illustrates why a claim about a “winner” needs to specify the dates being counted.

Did Mufasa pass Sonic later?
Mufasa won a later weekend chart. In its January 5, 2025 report, the AP estimated that Mufasa took $23.8 million for that weekend, ahead of Sonic’s $21.2 million. Yet the same report put Sonic’s cumulative domestic total at $187.5 million, still above Mufasa’s $169.2 million at that point. The AP’s January 5 account shows the distinction: Mufasa won that weekend, while Sonic remained ahead in total domestic earnings then.
ScreenDollars’ January 12 comparison, covering the films’ first 24 days, likewise listed higher domestic earnings for Sonic: $204.5 million versus $188.7 million for Mufasa. That is a dated comparison, not a statement about either film’s complete theatrical run.

What the worldwide figures do—and do not—show
Box Office Mojo’s current listing for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 gives a worldwide gross of $492,162,604: $236,115,100 domestic and $256,047,504 international. Its listing does not show a publication date, so those figures should be treated as the current listed snapshot rather than tied to a specific reporting day.
SEGA announced on January 22, 2025, that Sonic 3 had surpassed $425 million worldwide at that time, and said it had passed the prior film’s $405 million record. That announcement is a dated milestone, not the film’s final gross. SEGA’s announcement also describes the movie as an adaptation of its Sonic video game series. The figures available here do not establish a comparable final lifetime worldwide total for Mufasa, so they cannot support a claim about which film ended its run with the higher worldwide gross.

How to read the box-office comparison
“Beat” can refer to different measurements. For these films, a careful comparison keeps the period, geography, and type of figure attached to each result:
- Opening weekend: Sonic led Mufasa in the U.S. and Canada in the weekend ending December 22, 2024.
- Holiday frame: Sonic narrowly led the three-day weekend reported on December 29, while Mufasa led the five-day count.
- Later weekend: Mufasa led the first weekend of 2025, even though Sonic had the higher cumulative domestic total in the AP’s contemporaneous report.
- Worldwide lifetime comparison: Sonic’s current listed total is available, but no comparable final Mufasa total is established by these figures.
For context on the first 24 days, ScreenDollars’ January 12 comparison lists the domestic totals and opening figures for both films. The opening-weekend headline is accurate when read as a U.S.-and-Canada result for the December 20, 2024 release weekend—not as a claim about every weekend or the final global race.
