Sonic the Hedgehog 3 narrowly won the U.S. and Canada’s three-day box-office weekend of Dec. 27–29, 2024. Mufasa: The Lion King led across the broader five-day Christmas frame. The answer to “Who won the box office this weekend, Sonic 3 or Mufasa?” depends on which dates are being counted.
Who won the three-day weekend?
In Sunday studio estimates reported by the Associated Press, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earned $38 million for Dec. 27–29, compared with $37.1 million for Mufasa: The Lion King. Box Office Mojo’s later Domestic 2024 Weekend 52 table lists the films’ grosses as $37,010,506 and $36,804,122, respectively. These are different reporting stages: the AP figures are weekend estimates, while Box Office Mojo’s table is a later historical listing. The AP’s Dec. 29 report and Box Office Mojo’s weekend table document the two sets of figures.
The figures describe domestic box office in the U.S. and Canada, not worldwide grosses.
Why did Mufasa lead the holiday frame?
The three-day weekend was only part of the holiday picture. With Christmas falling on Wednesday in 2024, coverage also compared a five-day Christmas frame. The AP reported that Mufasa earned $63.8 million over that broader period, giving it the lead there even though Sonic edged it in the Dec. 27–29 three-day weekend. A five-day holiday result should not be described simply as the weekend total: the dates and duration change the comparison.

Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian described the unusually busy schedule this way in the AP’s Dec. 29 report: “Every day was like Saturday at the box office because of the way the holidays lined up.” The AP report also put estimated Christmas Day ticket sales overall at $61 million and quoted Comscore’s projection of about $8.75 billion in domestic box-office receipts for 2024; those were contemporary estimates, not final audited totals.
How the films performed on individual holidays
Single-day results are separate from both the three-day weekend and the five-day Christmas frame. Box Office Mojo’s 2024 holiday table lists Mufasa as the top Christmas Day release, with $14,722,175, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as the top New Year’s Eve release, with $7,274,167. These figures refer to each film’s listed gross on the named holiday, not its total for either multi-day period.
