Spoilers for all eight episodes of Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen. Rachel dies after Nicky calls off their wedding at the altar, then completes the ceremony too late to restore her trust. She is reborn as the new Witness, bound to attend weddings in Nicky’s family for generations. The twist turns the series’ curse into a story about doubt—and about two people failing to understand each other at the moment it matters most.
How the curse works
The curse began when a bride bargained with Death to bring back her dead fiancé. In exchange, descendants in her family must marry someone they truly believe is their soulmate by sundown on their wedding day, or they bleed to death. Rachel descends from the fiancée who was jilted when a later descendant refused to marry her. That refusal spread the curse into her family line and made him the Witness, a figure compelled to attend weddings in the jilted bride’s family.
In Netflix’s official ending explainer, “soulmate” is a matter of belief without lingering doubt—not an objective test the characters can pass. There is a loophole: a cursed descendant who never gets engaged or intends to marry can avoid personally triggering the wedding deadline, though they still carry the curse and can pass it on.
Why Nicky calls off the wedding
Rachel considers taking a potion that might guarantee Nicky is her soulmate, but chooses not to. She walks down the aisle believing she has enough reason to trust their relationship. Nicky, however, has learned about his mother’s affair and begins questioning marriage. At the altar, he refuses to go through with the wedding and dismisses Rachel’s warning about the curse. That refusal is what spreads the curse to his family line.

Creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston told TheWrap that Nicky’s refusal was a “Drag Me to Hell” kind of ending: until that moment, the story had largely followed Rachel’s point of view, while Nicky had his own emotional journey. Boston said that if he had not changed his mind, the couple would have married and the story would have ended differently.
Why Rachel dies after Nicky completes the ceremony
The later ceremony does not undo the altar refusal or reverse the curse’s spread. By the time Nicky completes the wedding, Rachel no longer believes he is her soulmate: his refusal has shattered her trust, and he has shown that he does not believe or understand her. As sundown approaches, she has married someone she no longer believes is her soulmate, so the curse takes her life.

This distinction matters: the ending does not establish that Rachel and Nicky were never soulmates. Rachel begins the ceremony believing he is; her belief collapses after he rejects her and then tries to complete the marriage. Boston described the tragedy to TheWrap as the two of them “just missing each other”—a badly timed shift in belief and a failure to meet each other emotionally.
What becoming the Witness means for Rachel
Netflix’s explainer says a Witness is created when the curse spreads to another bloodline. After the curse reaches Nicky’s family and Rachel dies, she is reborn as its new Witness. She must attend weddings in Nicky’s family for generations. The original Witness, whose role Rachel inherits, quietly dies and is released from the burden.

Boston told Netflix that the Witness ending came late in the writing process, after the team considered several possibilities. She liked the mythological shape of death followed by rebirth. She also imagined Rachel as more empathetic than the previous Witness, perhaps trying to warn people or end the curse. That is Boston’s personal imagining of Rachel’s future, not a confirmed continuation or second-season plot.

Boston has explained that the curse represents doubt. Rachel’s fear initially seems driven by outside threats, but the story turns inward: anxiety and uncertainty are tied to her relationship and her own history. In the finale, her faith in Nicky gives way after he refuses her and fails to believe her. Boston has said she does not personally believe in a fated-soulmate system; for this story, she focused on whether the right person sees you for who you are.

Those comments leave room for interpretation, but they do not confirm a sequel, renewal, or future storyline for Rachel. Netflix’s explainer says all eight episodes are streaming on Netflix; availability may vary by location.
