In Kamala Das’s “Someone Else’s Song,” the speaker describes an identity made up of many voices, then traces a movement through death and birth to a closing image of silence attached to another person’s song. That final image leaves open whether the speaker is joining another voice, depending on it, or losing ownership of her own.
Where the poem appears
“Someone Else’s Song” is included in Das’s first poetry collection, Summer in Calcutta (1965), as identified by Carol Rumens in The Guardian. A catalogue-style listing provides a second bibliographic reference to the collection. The University of Jammu’s 2010 English syllabus also lists the poem among prescribed Kamala Das poems; that establishes its curricular use, not its original publication history.
How the poem moves from voices to silence
The poem is arranged in four short stanzas. Its sequence matters: the opening presents the speaker as plural; the middle stanzas turn to deaths and births; the closing returns to voice, but transforms it into silence.
A self made of many voices
The opening phrase, “I am a million, million,” makes the speaker seem multitudinous rather than contained within a single, stable identity. The comparison to maids gathered at village wells gives that multiplicity an everyday social sound: many people are present, and their voices collect in one shared place. Rumens reads the repeated phrase as musical and numbing, evoking what she calls “a universally multiplied and scattered identity.” That is a critic’s interpretation, not a definitive statement of Das’s intent.

Deaths, then births
The second stanza turns toward clustered deaths and memory. The third shifts to births, with a forceful image of hands marking the air. Read in sequence, these stanzas broaden the speaker’s many-voiced identity beyond a single moment: it is set among the passage of lives, their endings and beginnings. Rumens describes this movement as passing through death and birth before arriving at silence.
A song that belongs to someone else
In the final stanza, the poem returns to the problem of voice, but the speaker’s relation to it has changed. Silences are strung onto another person’s song. The image does not settle whether the speaker finds connection in that song, relies on a voice that is not hers, or experiences a loss of ownership. The uncertainty is central: the poem ends not by resolving the speaker’s identity, but by placing it in relation to someone else’s voice.

What “someone else’s song” can mean
The title invites a question of ownership. The song is explicitly someone else’s, yet the speaker’s silences are attached to it. One reading emphasizes solidarity: a self formed among many voices may find a place in another person’s expression. Another stresses dependence, because the speaker’s silence is linked to a song she does not own. A third hears loss: the closing image may suggest that the speaker’s own voice has receded. The poem supports these possibilities without establishing one as the answer.
