Crunchyroll’s Ani-May 2025 promotion temporarily made 20 anime series available to stream free with ads, including Solo Leveling Season 1. The rollout began on May 1, 2025, as part of a wider campaign covering anime streaming, merchandise, retail promotions, home video, and games. It was a time-limited promotion—not a permanent catalog change.
Crunchyroll’s Ani-May 2025 promotion temporarily made 20 anime series available to stream free with ads, including Solo Leveling Season 1. The rollout began on May 1, 2025, as part of a month-long campaign that also covered merchandise, retail promotions, home video, and mobile games. It was a promotional offer tied to Ani-May 2025—not a permanent change to Crunchyroll’s catalog and not an offer that should automatically be assumed to remain available in 2026.
What the Ani-May free-streaming offer included
Crunchyroll announced on April 29, 2025, that it would begin rolling out 20 “hit” anime series for free viewing with advertising starting May 1. The announcement specifically named:
- Cowboy Bebop
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
- Haikyu!!
- JUJUTSU KAISEN
- Shangri-La Frontier
- Solo Leveling Season 1
- The Apothecary Diaries
The official announcement used “and more” rather than publishing a complete list in the accessible text. That means it is safer to describe these as confirmed examples than to reconstruct an unverified 20-title lineup.

Was Solo Leveling Season 2 free too?
The confirmed inclusion was Season 1 of Solo Leveling. Coverage of the promotion distinguished Season 1 from Season 2, so the Ani-May announcement does not support saying that the entire anime—including both seasons—was available free with ads.
The precise version of the headline is therefore: Crunchyroll made 20 anime series available to stream free with ads for Ani-May 2025, including Solo Leveling Season 1. “All of Solo Leveling was free” is too broad unless a separate catalog check establishes that Season 2 was included in a particular territory.
When did the promotion start?
Crunchyroll published its announcement on April 29, 2025, and gave May 1, 2025 as the start of the free-with-ads streaming rollout. The offer was part of the Ani-May 2025 celebration and should be treated as time-limited. The announcement did not establish that the titles would remain free indefinitely.
Availability could also vary by market. Although Ani-May was presented as a global celebration, the accompanying retail, event, and promotional details differed across regions, including the United States and Canada, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. A specific country’s catalog, subtitle or dub options, and end date should therefore be checked directly rather than inferred from the global campaign branding.
What does “free with ads” mean?
For the titles included in the promotion, viewers could watch without paying for a premium subscription, with advertising shown during the viewing experience. “Free with ads” did not mean that every Crunchyroll title was free, that premium benefits were removed, or that the promotional selection had the same availability in every country.

It also did not convert the promotion into a permanent free tier. After a campaign like this ends, a title may require a subscription, remain available under a different promotional arrangement, or become unavailable in a particular territory.
Ani-May 2025 was broader than streaming
The free anime lineup was only one part of Crunchyroll’s Ani-May campaign. The company described the event as a wider celebration spanning streaming, shopping, licensed merchandise, home video, and games.
Retail and merchandise promotions
Crunchyroll highlighted partnerships and retail activity in several regions. Named partners included UNIQLO, Hot Topic, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Planet Hollywood New York, and Funko, alongside regional retailers. These promotions covered the broader anime-fan market rather than being limited to Solo Leveling.

Because retailer participation and offers were market-specific, readers should not assume that a deal advertised in the United States or Canada was also available elsewhere—or that it continued after Ani-May 2025.
Home-video releases
The campaign also promoted releases through Crunchyroll Store, including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 1 Part 2 Limited Edition, Satoshi Kon’s Paranoia Agent Complete Series SteelBook, and Goblin Slayer Season 1 SteelBook.

- Cherry blossom shaped umbrella
- Cherries in hair accessories
- Artist's masterpiece
- Be sure to collect this and enhance your display with other incredible figures
Those physical releases were separate from the free streaming promotion. Owning a Blu-ray or DVD is a way to keep a particular release, while free streaming was dependent on the promotional catalog and applicable regional rights.
Crunchyroll Game Vault additions
Ani-May also featured new additions to Crunchyroll Game Vault, including:
- Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
- Corpse Party
- Grisaia Phantom Trigger Vol. 1
- Shin Chan: Shiro and the Coal Town
- Shogun Showdown
- White Day
This broader lineup helps explain why Ani-May was positioned as a month-long anime celebration rather than simply a temporary streaming discount.

If the promotion introduced you to Solo Leveling, the official English print editions provide another way to continue exploring the story. Yen Press publishes the English comic by Chugong and DUBU, and the official Crunchyroll Store lists Solo Leveling Manhwa Volume 1 as the English print edition of the Korean webcomic.
For readers who prefer collecting physical media, Solo Leveling Season 1 was also released in standard and limited home-video editions. Those Blu-ray/DVD releases are an ownership option, not part of the Ani-May free-streaming offer. Availability, edition contents, and retailer stock can change, so prospective buyers should check the current product listing before ordering.

The key takeaway
Crunchyroll’s Ani-May 2025 celebration offered a temporary, ad-supported way to watch a selection of 20 anime series beginning May 1, 2025. Solo Leveling Season 1 was among the confirmed examples, but the available evidence does not establish that Season 2 was included. The campaign also extended into anime retail, merchandise, physical releases, and games. Anyone checking the offer now should verify current regional availability rather than assuming that a 2025 promotion is still active.

Was Solo Leveling Season 2 included in the Ani-May 2025 free offer?
The confirmed offer covered Solo Leveling Season 1. The available announcement did not establish that Season 2 was included, so readers should not treat both seasons as part of the Ani-May free-streaming lineup.
Is Solo Leveling still free on Crunchyroll?
The promotion began rolling out on May 1, 2025. It was tied to the Ani-May 2025 campaign and was not announced as a permanent free-with-ads catalog. Current availability must be checked by territory.
Which anime were free during Ani-May 2025?
Confirmed examples included Cowboy Bebop, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Haikyu!!, JUJUTSU KAISEN, Shangri-La Frontier, Solo Leveling Season 1, and The Apothecary Diaries. Crunchyroll’s accessible announcement referred to additional titles without providing a complete list.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Ani-May 2025 made 20 selected anime series free to watch with ads starting May 1, including Solo Leveling Season 1. It was a temporary, region-dependent promotion—not proof that both seasons or the full Crunchyroll catalog became permanently free.
