Social dance is dance people take part in for shared enjoyment, connection, or community—not one single style. It can be partnered or done in a group, and a beginner can start with an introductory class, even without bringing a partner.
What counts as social dance?
Social dance describes a broad range of participatory dancing in social settings. It may happen in a class, at a dance gathering, or in another community setting. The music, movements, customs, and expectations differ by tradition and location, so it is more accurate to name a specific style than to treat social dance as one universal form.
Examples listed in MedlinePlus consumer health guidance include salsa, ballroom, swing, square and contra dancing, line dancing, and tango. Some of these are commonly danced with partners; line dancing is one option that does not require one.
Which kind should a beginner try?
Choose a style that appeals to you and is available nearby. The music and cultural tradition can be as important to your choice as the movements. A class description or a short observation visit can help you decide whether the teaching style and group atmosphere feel comfortable.

Can you go social dancing without a partner?
Yes. Some classes can pair participants or rotate partners, while line dancing is a group option that does not require a partner. Ask the organizer how that particular class handles partners; arrangements are not the same everywhere.
How do you get started?
- Find a local option. Check dance schools, health clubs, community centers, and local dance organizations for introductory classes.
- Contact the organizer. Confirm the level, whether you need a partner, what the class costs, and whether you can observe first.
- Ask about clothing and shoes. Footwear depends on the dance and venue, so confirm requirements before buying anything.
- Start at a manageable pace. MedlinePlus advises: “If you are new to dance or have been inactive, start with a beginner class.”
What can dance offer for health and wellbeing?
MedlinePlus describes dance as aerobic and weight-bearing activity and lists possible benefits involving heart health, strength, balance, coordination, memory, stress, and mood. The exercise intensity depends on the style and how long you dance, so social dance should not be assigned one universal workout level or calorie figure.

An umbrella review by Fancourt and colleagues (2021) reported 34 individual outcomes with positive effects across seven domains in the moderate-to-high-quality evidence it reviewed, including physical fitness and function, cognition, mental health, wellbeing, and social functioning. The evidence varied by dance mode and showed substantial differences in intervention frequency and timing. These findings concern the studied interventions and participants; they do not establish that every casual dance setting will produce those outcomes.
A 2024 narrative review describes growing interest in social dance and mental health, while noting heterogeneity and a lack of methodological cohesiveness. Dance has been studied for possible mental-health benefits, but that is not proof that it treats depression or replaces professional care.

Does social dance prevent falls in older adults?
It should not be presented as a proven fall-prevention program. In a 2016 cluster randomized trial across 23 retirement villages near Sydney, 530 residents were randomized to twice-weekly folk or ballroom classes for 12 months or to a control group; 522 contributed falls data, and the mean age was 78. Investigators reported fall rates of 0.80 per person-year in controls and 1.03 in the dance group, with no significant overall difference between groups. Those results apply to the study population and intervention, not every age group, dance style, or setting.
