Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update: 2024 Presidential Election, Trump’s MSG Rally” clip, published November 2, 2024, linked Donald Trump’s Green Bay garbage-truck appearance with controversies from his Madison Square Garden rally. The segment was anchored by Colin Jost and Michael Che and also referred to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s Puerto Rico remark.
What the November 2 ‘Weekend Update’ covered
The official SNL clip description identifies the segment’s election and Madison Square Garden context, and specifically references a comedian at the rally describing Puerto Rico as a “floating pile of garbage.” The segment appeared before Election Day, tying campaign events and rally controversies together through satire.
Contemporaneous coverage by The Daily Beast describes additional jokes about Trump’s Green Bay garbage-truck appearance and a suggestive interaction with a microphone at the Madison Square Garden rally. Those details come from secondary reporting, not an official transcript of the segment.
Why Trump appeared in a garbage truck
The truck appearance followed President Joe Biden’s October 29, 2024, remark about Trump supporters. The Associated Press reported that Trump’s October 30 photo opportunity in Green Bay, Wisconsin, was intended to draw attention to Biden’s comment. Trump climbed into a white, campaign-branded garbage truck and spoke to reporters from it.

The two microphone moments were different events
Detroit: a technical failure on October 18
At a Detroit campaign rally on October 18, Trump’s microphone failed. The Associated Press reported that he paced onstage in silence for nearly 20 minutes. This was an equipment problem, separate from the later Madison Square Garden moment.

Madison Square Garden: a gesture discussed on ‘Weekend Update’
At the October 27 rally in New York’s Madison Square Garden, Trump made a suggestive gesture involving a microphone, according to contemporaneous coverage of the “Weekend Update” segment. It was this rally moment—not the Detroit sound failure—that supplied the microphone joke described in that reporting.
The rally’s Puerto Rico controversy
At the same October 27 rally, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” SNL’s official clip description summarizes the remark as a “floating pile of garbage.” The remark drew attention in the closing days of the 2024 campaign, and its inclusion in the clip helps explain why the official description connects “Weekend Update” with Trump’s MSG rally.

What Che’s quoted joke does—and does not—establish
The Daily Beast quoted Michael Che joking about Trump’s age, the assassination attempts, and the garbage-truck appearance: “He’s like 80 years old, his brain is mush, somebody tried to kill him twice, and yet he’s in a garbage truck pretending to like Wisconsin.” That is a comedian’s satirical line as reported by a secondary outlet, not a factual assessment or an independently verified transcript of the broadcast.
