Che’s punchline about catching farmworkers was satire—not confirmation that agents had been assigned to target them.
What “Weekend Update” said about the Super Bowl and ICE
Bad Bunny hosted the premiere, with Doja Cat as musical guest. After reports that ICE agents would be present at the Super Bowl, Che joked: “You know, to catch all those farmworkers who can afford Super Bowl tickets.” The line drew its humor from the contrast between immigration enforcement and the expense of attending the game; it was Che’s joke, not an announced enforcement plan. The Associated Press reported on the remarks and the context.
What Kristi Noem said—and what she did not
Asked by a podcaster about ICE at the Super Bowl, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said agents would be there because the Department of Homeland Security was responsible for keeping the event safe. The AP reported that Noem did not specify whether agents would conduct immigration enforcement or perform other law-enforcement duties customary at the event. The reported ICE presence and stated security rationale are narrower facts than a claim that Noem announced deportation operations at the game.
Bad Bunny had said concern about possible immigration raids outside concerts was one reason his Puerto Rico residency bypassed the continental United States, according to the AP. That backdrop helps explain the subject of Che’s joke without turning the joke into evidence of what ICE would do at the Super Bowl.

Che also joked about Combs after his sentencing. Rolling Stone reported that Combs received a 50-month sentence for two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. He had been acquitted of the three most serious charges, including racketeering; the sentence was not for those acquitted charges. Che’s line included: “it’s hard to watch someone I love get punished, but that’s what Diddy would do.” Rolling Stone’s October 5 report recapped the jokes and sentencing.

Jost addressed the government shutdown, which was on its fourth day, joking that the government had “completely shut down.” He also riffed on the public needing a break and on Cracker Barrel reverting its logo, as reported by Rolling Stone. The premiere’s “Weekend Update” thus linked current political and cultural headlines rather than focusing on a single subject. Georgia Public Broadcasting also reported on the October 5 premiere coverage.
