At its 50th anniversary special on February 16, 2025, Saturday Night Live staged a mock in-memoriam for characters and sketches that had aged badly. Introduced by Tom Hanks, the segment put labels such as “ethnic stereotypes,” “sexual harassment,” “ableism” and “body shaming” over old clips, then turned its criticism toward viewers who had laughed. It was pointed self-directed satire—not a formal apology or a complete accounting of the show’s history.
What did SNL say about its problematic sketches at the 50th anniversary?
Hanks framed the segment as a memorial for “SNL characters and sketches that have aged horribly.” Rather than honor performers, the solemn-looking montage revisited comedy and attached blunt labels to it. The joke landed on two targets: the material itself and the audience’s past willingness to laugh along.
Hanks made that second target explicit: “But even though these characters, accents and let’s just call them ‘ethnic’ wigs were unquestionably in poor taste, you all laughed at them. So if anyone should be canceled, shouldn’t it be you, the audience? Something to think about.” The line invited viewers to reflect on their complicity, but remained part of the comic bit; it was not a literal call to cancel the audience or an institutional apology.
Which sketches and characters appeared in the montage?
Accounts of the broadcast identify a range of clips and labels. The montage grouped distinct kinds of material under one comic memorial frame; its examples should not be read as an exhaustive list of controversies or as evidence that every clip involved the same kind of harm.

| Example shown | Label or context reported |
|---|---|
| John Belushi’s Samurai character | Among the montage’s opening examples; the AP account does not assign it a specific on-screen label. |
| Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze in the Chippendales sketch | “Body shaming,” according to the AP. |
| The “Jane, you ignorant slut” catchphrase | “Slut shaming,” according to the AP. |
| Tracy Morgan’s Astronaut Jones | Shown under a sexual-harassment label, according to TheWrap. |
| A Fred Armisen character opposite Ben Affleck | Labeled ableist, according to TheWrap. |
| A first-season Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor word-association sketch | The sketch ends with a racial slur and Pryor’s retort, as reported by TheWrap. |
Variety’s account lists additional categories used in the montage: ethnic stereotypes, underage sexual harassment, gay panic, sexism and racial slurs, alongside sexual harassment, body shaming, slut shaming and ableism. Those labels describe the segment’s framing of selected clips, not a formal classification system adopted by the show.
How did former cast members reflect on old comedy?
Amy Poehler on appropriation and repair
In a 2025 conversation with Will Forte on her podcast, Amy Poehler reflected on performers playing people they should not have played. “I misappropriated, I appropriated…I didn’t know,” she said. She added: “The best thing you can do is make repairs, learn from your mistakes, do better. It’s all you can do.” These were Poehler’s personal reflections, not an official statement on behalf of SNL.

Tina Fey on rewatching her writing
In January 2024, Tina Fey told Seth Meyers that watching old SNL clips with her children could bring her face to face with writing she now considered problematic. “There will be something that comes on that is, one, not playing and, two, definitely problematic,” she said. Fey’s comment came before the 50th anniversary special and was not a response to its montage.
Why was Pat missing from the broadcast?
Julia Sweeney said in June 2025 that Pat appeared in a dress-rehearsal version of the canceled-characters segment but not in the broadcast. Sweeney said Hanks told her Pat had been in rehearsal; she did not know who removed the character or why. She also expressed uncertainty about wanting Pat included, since appearing could mean being mentioned only as a canceled character. The reason for the change is not established by her account.

How does a later SNL controversy relate?
A March 2026 report concerned a different sketch, in which canceled celebrities claimed to have Tourette syndrome. The sketch was cut from the broadcast and uploaded to YouTube. Tourettes Action CEO Emma McNally criticized it, saying: “Mocking a disability is never acceptable. It would not be tolerated for any other condition, and it should not be tolerated by people with Tourette’s.” That later dispute shows that arguments over parody continued, but it was separate from the SNL50 montage.
