They debuted together when the NBC show premiered on 11 October 1975, but their tenures and later careers took different paths.
Who was in the original SNL cast?
Known as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players, the first-season lineup was Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris. The premiere was hosted by George Carlin, with musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian, according to the Associated Press.
This list refers specifically to the seven original season-one performers, not every comedian or musician who appeared during the program’s early years. Their departures were staggered: Chase left during season two; Aykroyd and Belushi left in 1979; and the remaining original cast members departed after the 1979–80 season, according to the Television Academy.
Where are the seven cast members now?
Chevy Chase
Chase was the first original cast member to leave. His Weekend Update anchoring, President Gerald Ford impression and physical comedy helped establish the show’s early identity. After SNL, he became a film star, with credits including Fletch, Caddyshack, Three Amigos and the Vacation series. These are career highlights reported by the Associated Press retrospective, not a confirmation of his activities in October 2026.

What can be said about the living cast members today?
The available career retrospectives document substantial post-show work for the five cast members who are not reported here as deceased, but they do not establish each person’s current projects, work status or health in October 2026. A career history should not be mistaken for a live status update.
For a contemporary account of the cast’s legacy, the Television Academy’s SNL history and interviews include colleagues’ memories. Paul Shaffer, who was in the band from the 1975 premiere and later appeared in sketches, called the group “a hell of a team.”
