John Mulaney’s sixth time hosting Saturday Night Live landed two days before Election Day, pairing an election-themed cold open with a Port Authority-set musical sketch and two Chappell Roan performances. Roan sang “Pink Pony Club” in Halloween Bride of Frankenstein styling and introduced “The Giver,” while Mulaney’s monologue drew on life as a new father of two.
Saturday Night Live Season 50, Episode 5 aired November 2, 2024, with Mulaney as host and Roan as musical guest. Peacock lists the episode at 69 minutes. NBCUniversal’s schedule establishes the episode date and billing, while Peacock’s episode listing provides the runtime.

Election week opened with a mirror exchange
The cold open brought Vice President Kamala Harris into a scene with Maya Rudolph, who had been playing Harris on the show. Speaking across a mirror, the two shared last-minute words ahead of the November 5 election. The pairing made the episode’s proximity to Election Day part of its opening premise, rather than simply background context.
Mulaney turned his monologue to new fatherhood
In his stand-up monologue, Mulaney talked about the birth of his daughter and the ups and downs of becoming a new father of two. Peacock identifies him as a former SNL writer and says this was his sixth time hosting. The episode also revisited “What’s That Name” in an election edition, testing Mulaney’s political knowledge and including a reference to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate.

“Port Authority Duane Reade” launched into a musical mashup
The episode’s large-scale musical sketch began at a Duane Reade in the Port Authority bus terminal. Mulaney played a cashier, and Pete Davidson played a customer ordering a gallon of milk. That purchase set off a musical mashup that, according to Peacock’s recap, included Lion King opossums and dancing Timothée Chalamet lookalikes.
The sketch continued Mulaney’s association with elaborate musical comedy, using an ordinary convenience-store transaction as the setup for a sudden change in scale and style. Peacock also lists “Beppo,” a Dan Bulla digital short featuring a space chimp, among the episode’s other segments.

Chappell Roan performed “Pink Pony Club” and “The Giver”
Roan’s first performance was “Pink Pony Club,” presented as a Halloween rendition. She appeared in glam Bride of Frankenstein styling, giving the song a seasonal visual concept. Her second performance introduced “The Giver,” which Peacock described as set to the theme of a Country Bear Jamboree.
| Performance | Episode presentation |
|---|---|
| “Pink Pony Club” | Halloween rendition; Roan dressed as a glam Bride of Frankenstein |
| “The Giver” | Introduced in a setting themed around the Country Bear Jamboree |
Weekend Update included Heidi Gardner as Reba McEntire
Heidi Gardner appeared as Reba McEntire and discussed her election decision during Weekend Update. That character appearance placed another election-focused moment in the episode without changing its balance of topical comedy, Mulaney’s personal material, and musical performances.
