In Saturday Night Live’s October 19, 2024 cold open, Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris tries to answer questions while Alec Baldwin’s Bret Baier repeatedly cuts her off. The sketch turns that interruption into its central joke—and adds a jab at Fox’s airing of the wrong Trump clip. It is scripted satire of a real Fox News interview, not a transcript of it.

Which SNL cold open is this?

The official SNL YouTube channel published “Fox News Kamala Harris Interview Cold Open – SNL” on October 19, 2024. Maya Rudolph plays Harris, and Alec Baldwin plays Fox News anchor Bret Baier. The segment parodies Harris’s October 16 interview with Baier on Fox News’ Special Report.

What happens in the sketch?

The cold open’s central gag is Baier’s relentless interruptions: even when Harris asks him to stop, his character keeps talking. The Associated Press reported this exchange from the sketch:

Rudolph as Harris: “May I please finish?”

Baldwin as Baier: “I’m asking you to.”

Rudolph as Harris: “Well, then you have to listen.”

Baldwin as Baier: “Well I can’t because I’m talking.”

Rudolph as Harris: “Well, When will you stop?”

Baldwin as Baier: “Maybe when I go to bed.”

The exchange is a comic exaggeration of the interview dynamic, not evidence that these lines were spoken during the actual broadcast. The sketch also mocks Fox’s airing of the wrong Trump clip; AP noted that the parody treated the incident as a mistake Baier had acknowledged.

What was the real interview?

Harris sat for a real interview with Baier on Fox News’ Special Report on October 16, 2024. Fox’s video listing describes it as a 26:44 interview covering immigration, the economy, and responses to U.S. adversaries. Before the broadcast, Baier characterized his intended approach as “tough but fair,” according to an October 14 Fox News Media Relations announcement; that phrase was his own advance description, not an independent assessment of the interview.

The original interview and the SNL segment have different purposes: one is a news interview, while the other is scripted satire that heightens interruptions and makes jokes about the wrong-clip incident.

How many people watched the interview?

In an October 17, 2024 release, Fox News Media Relations reported that the October 16 interview drew 7.8 million viewers, including 1,126,000 viewers aged 25–54, citing Nielsen Media Research. Those figures describe the Fox interview, not the SNL cold open. They are figures reported by Fox with Nielsen attribution, not an independently audited audience count presented here.
