In May 2025, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that its Special Victims Bureau was investigating criminal allegations involving Smokey Robinson, describing the inquiry as being in its early stages. The announcement followed a civil lawsuit by four former housekeepers alleging sexual assault and rape. Robinson denied the allegations through his attorney. The reports available as of October 8, 2026, do not establish whether the investigation remains open, concluded, or led to charges.
What the Sheriff’s Department confirmed
On May 15, 2025, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said its Special Victims Bureau was “actively investigating criminal allegations involving William Robinson, a.k.a. ‘Smokey Robinson,’” according to the Los Angeles Times. Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida said the investigation was in its early stages and that the department had no further comment.
This was confirmation of an investigation, not a finding that an offense occurred. The announcement was made in May 2025; the reporting available as of October 8, 2026, does not establish the inquiry’s current status or outcome.
What the civil lawsuit alleges
Four former housekeepers filed a civil lawsuit on May 6, 2025, alleging that Robinson sexually assaulted and raped them during their employment. The Associated Press reported that the complaint described alleged incidents spanning 2007 through 2024 and sought at least $50 million in damages. Those dates and allegations are claims in the civil complaint, and the damages figure is an amount sought—not an award.

Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, denied the allegations, the AP reported. The lawsuit and the denial are opposing positions; neither, on its own, establishes what happened.
How the criminal investigation differs from the civil case
The lawsuit is a civil claim brought by the former housekeepers. The Sheriff’s Department’s announcement concerned a criminal investigation. They are distinct processes: filing a civil complaint does not prove criminal conduct, and confirmation of an investigation does not mean charges have been filed or guilt established.

The separate 2015 matter
The 2015 allegation reported separately by the AP was not the same matter as the Sheriff’s Department investigation announced in 2025. In the earlier case, prosecutors said no charges were filed because of insufficient evidence. That outcome does not decide the truth of the later allegations or the status of the later investigation.

The reports cited here were published in May 2025. They do not confirm whether the Sheriff’s Department investigation was later closed or remains open, whether prosecutors made a charging decision, or whether the civil case had further developments by October 8, 2026. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the May 2025 announcement as a verified current update.
