Smiley is a 2022 Spanish Netflix romantic-comedy series set in Barcelona. It begins when Álex, a bartender angry about being ghosted, accidentally sends a voice message to Bruno, an architect he does not know. That mistake becomes an unlikely romance surrounded by stories about friendship, sex, work, family and commitment.
The completed series has one season of eight episodes, each approximately 33–37 minutes. All episodes premiered on December 7, 2022. Creator and playwright Guillem Clua confirmed in 2023 that there would be no filmed second season.
What is Smiley about?
Álex records an angry message for the man who has disappeared from his life. A wrong number sends it instead to Bruno, a stranger whose more controlled, cerebral personality contrasts with Álex’s impulsiveness. Their accidental contact leads to meetings, dates, misunderstandings, separations and reunions.
The central relationship is only part of the format. Álex and Bruno’s friends and acquaintances pursue their own romantic and personal turning points, giving the show an ensemble structure rather than stretching one will-they-or-won’t-they plot across the entire season. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the characters as navigating “hesitations, hangups and missed connections” while looking for love in Barcelona. Netflix’s title page provides the episode descriptions and current catalog information.

Is it really a gay romantic comedy?
Yes. The principal romance is between two men, and Netflix classifies the series as both romantic comedy and LGBTQ+ television. “Gay romantic comedy” is therefore an accurate description of its central story, while “LGBTQ+ romantic comedy” better reflects the wider ensemble.
Smiley uses familiar rom-com machinery—coincidence, chemistry, missed timing, comic misunderstandings and emotional reversals—without making the characters’ sexuality a problem that the plot must solve. The result is warm and accessible rather than bleak or issue-driven. Its approach is a mainstream love story with queer characters at the center, not a drama about coming out or discrimination.

Álex, Bruno and the cast
| Actor | Character or role |
|---|---|
| Carlos Cuevas | Álex, the bartender whose mistaken message starts the story |
| Miki Esparbé | Bruno, the architect who receives it |
| Pepón Nieto | Javier |
| Meritxell Calvo | Vero |
| Giannina Fruttero | Patricia |
| Eduardo Lloveras | Albert |
| Ruth Llopis | Núria |
| Ramon Pujol | Ramón |
The supporting characters are structurally important. Their parallel stories let the series examine different forms of dating, domestic life, friendship and moving on, and they keep the show from treating Álex and Bruno as representative of every queer experience. Reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes frequently identify the ensemble as one of the show’s strengths.
Clua created and wrote the series and served as showrunner. Episodes were directed by David Martín Porras and Marta Pahissa. Netflix’s production announcement lists the principal cast and describes the mistaken voice message that brings the couple together: About Netflix.

It is a compact binge, but the season is organized around the holiday period. Christmas is central to episode 5, while episode 7 takes place around New Year’s Eve. Those occasions give the show a cozy, reunion-oriented atmosphere without turning it into a Christmas-only series.
Barcelona, language and rating
Barcelona is more than a backdrop: the city’s homes, bars and social spaces provide the recurring environment for the ensemble. The production is Spanish-language and incorporates Catalan. Netflix lists Spanish as the original audio; Catalan, dubbing, subtitles, audio description and age-rating displays vary by country and can change over time. The play behind the Netflix series
Smiley began as Guillem Clua’s stage play, which premiered in Barcelona in November 2012. It later played in Barcelona and Madrid and was translated or performed internationally. The television version keeps the theatrical premise—a relationship propelled by dialogue, entrances, misunderstandings and reversals—but expands it into eight episodes.
The adaptation has room for parallel romances, more locations, a fuller Barcelona setting and modern communication themes such as dating apps, ghosting and ambiguous commitment. Clua has said the story suited 30- to 35-minute episodes and that the production intentionally reflects Barcelona’s Spanish- and Catalan-speaking reality. Netflix’s account of the stage history is available at About Netflix; discussion of the episode format and languages appears in El Periódico.

Is Smiley worth watching?
Smiley is a good choice if you want a short, finished queer romance with a holiday-season setting, conversational comedy and several relationship stories running at once. Its compact episodes make it easy to sample, and the Barcelona setting and Spanish-language production give a familiar rom-com shape a distinct cultural setting.
Expect conventional devices rather than formal experimentation. Repeated miscommunication and romantic reversals will appeal to viewers who enjoy classic genre mechanics but may frustrate anyone who dislikes coincidence-driven plots. Some critics also found the surrounding ensemble more compelling than the Álex–Bruno pairing. Rotten Tomatoes’ captured listing showed a 100% critics’ score from six reviews and a 92% audience score from more than 100 ratings as of August 16, 2026; the small critic sample should not be treated as proof of universal acclaim. See the current figures and reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.
Does Smiley have a season 2?
No. Guillem Clua confirmed in 2023 that a second television season would not be filmed. It is more precise to describe the series as a completed one-season production than to claim a specific Netflix cancellation decision. The confirmation was reported by Cadena SER Catalunya and La Vanguardia.
The first season reaches a romantic endpoint, but the characters’ story has continued in another medium. Clua’s theatrical sequel, Smiley, después del amor (“Smiley: After Love”), is a stage work—not a Netflix season 2 or a filmed continuation. SensaCine discusses that distinction.
