Spoilers for Smile (2022). Rose does not defeat the entity. The cabin victory and reconciliation that seem to offer her an escape are another deception. Joel arrives in time to witness Rose die by suicide, making him the next link in the curse.
How does Smile end?
Rose returns to the childhood home where her mother died, determined to face the entity alone. The sequence appears to give her a breakthrough: she confronts the demon, seems to burn it, and then reconnects honestly with Joel. But the apparent victory is part of the entity’s deception. Rose is still at the cabin, and Joel has arrived. He witnesses her death, so the curse continues through him.

The cabin confrontation also brings Rose back to the guilt she carries over her mother’s death and not answering her mother’s final plea for help. The ending makes that emotional history central to Rose’s struggle, but it does not establish that confronting it can undo the curse.
How does the curse pass on?
Within the film’s fictional rules, the entity’s curse passes when someone witnesses a victim’s suicide. A previous victim survives by killing another person, which transfers the chain rather than ending it. Rose rejects that option and tries to ensure no one is there to witness her death; the final reveal shows that she has not escaped the entity’s control.

These are supernatural mechanics in a horror story, not claims about real-world suicide or trauma. The film’s ending is bleak because Rose’s attempt to break the cycle fails, not because it offers a real-world prescription for responding to distress.
What does Rose’s apparent reconciliation mean?
The scene with Joel is emotionally significant even though it is not a literal escape. In the apparent reconciliation, Rose admits painful truths about her past. The honesty creates a moment of catharsis before the film reveals that the entity still has her trapped.

Writer-director Parker Finn described the film to TIME as a meditation on trauma and its ripple effects, rather than a definitive commentary on trauma. He also left room for viewers to read the entity as supernatural or to question what Rose experiences. In TheWrap, Finn said that confronting trauma does not mean it simply goes away. That is his account of the film’s intent, not a clinical claim.
Why does the film keep reversing what viewers see?
“The movie teaches you how to watch it” is a useful way to describe an effect of Smile, not a confirmed quotation or tagline. The film keeps viewers close to Rose’s perspective, then makes apparent relief unstable: the reconciliation feels real until the reveal overturns it. As TIME’s account of the ending notes, the fake reconciliation is reversed by that final shift.

Those reversals make the audience share Rose’s uncertainty about what is happening. Finn has described building horror around character and emotional investment. In a Directors Guild of America interview, he also discussed experimenting in the edit with the timing and whisper of a prominent jump-scare. The editing detail illustrates the care given to a scare’s tension; it does not settle whether the film’s events should be read as supernatural or psychological.

Finn has said he is not drawn to endings that tie everything up neatly. In a ComingSoon interview, he described the ending as reaching the story’s “worst logical conclusion,” with emotional catharsis beforehand. The brief sense of emotional honesty therefore does not promise recovery: it makes the final reversal hurt more while refusing a tidy escape.
